Now that telegram is compromised, what's your excuse for not using xmpp? It's objectively the best messaging solution you can use
>securely encrypted
>distributed
>can host your own server
>basically email in good
>extensions to adapt to advances in technology
>rock-solid xml basses message format
Now that telegram is compromised, what's your excuse for not using xmpp...
Use it and rocket.chat, but I recommend rocket.chat over it. Has all the advantages of xmpp but is modern, supports more, protocol is actually sensible, and there are good apps for it
Can you host your own server without their """cloud""" though?
matrix
Yes, and I do
xml is a turd.
Also the way that multiple devices are handled. The message is sent to 1 device, and then that device sends it back to the server and to each other device itself. Handled by the device instead of the server, which is insane
My excuse is Signal.
xmpp is a more simple approach than matrix, making it easier for developers on all platforms to develop clients for it
Stop shilling this it's a fucking nsa honeypot by now
>NSA honeypot
Any proof ?
>xmpp is a more simple approach than matrix
you must have heard about the big mess around XEP.
from my view matrix+riot is simpler than xmpp+whatever and i hope normies join to finally have a good messenger replacing whatsapp etc.
Matrix is garbage. Rocket.chat uses web sockets. Matrix uses raw HTTP. Such a stupid waste of bandwidth and requires the client to poll constantly
Retroshare anyone?
Read the article retard
matrix.org
http is baseline and there is already a draft for websockets.
imo rocket.chat is to replace slack. i hope riot replaces messenger (while providing slack features).
Any other reason than using HTTP for it being garbage?
What the fuck is telegram?
As a side effect of HTTP messages can take a little (a few seconds) to come in. Which sounds fine but it's very annoying.
Direct messages are just groups in Matrix. Which means if someone else was added, they'd see all of my private messages with that person forever. I can see myself trying to create a group with 2 people and accidentally adding one to my private chat.
Isn't that just a workaround for server behaviour which will become superfluous with message carbons?
i found the delay also annoying and couldnt make out when it happens.
you can setup a room so that the history is not shared with people joining. i do agree that the default should be different for rooms and dms.
>centralized garbage
>phone numbers only, no ids.
>jewgle libs
>no fdroid support
>shitty electron desktop client
It's a big piece of shit, stop shilling it.
>login with facebook
>login with twitter
>login with linkedin
>login with ..
Yeah, no thank you. This doesn't belong in this thread.
I do use it
Matrix is the present and future. Build your own server, it's worth it, kinda the while point of decentralization. It'll be faster than the over crowded matrix.org
Installation and setup takes like 15 minutes
Does xmpp have video chat? Because if not then wire wins
Does anyone have information about LINE selling user data? A friend of mine preaches hate for Facebook messenger but claims LINE is pure
>Implying anyone actually wants videochat
What are the drawbacks to using a public xmpp server over hosting your own? Inherently insecure?
If you're using anything over wire at this point you are of autism.
>no reason
Yeah no I'll stick with xmpp
The biggest drawback is probably that you can't control when it's going down for things like maintenance. Otherwise it's just fine, since everythings end-to-end encrypted
XMPP with OTR? Is that what you are getting at?
Telegram has always been a bad choice. Signal is my preferred messenger.
Wire collects too much metadata.
XMPP uses omemo nowadays, which is a standardised extension to the protocol that aims to implement the protocol used by signal and make it work for xmpp
read
signal is shit and you shouldn't be using it if you're interested in freedom and privacy
Thanks
Ok, can anyone vouch for a decent public xmpp server? Conversations.im is only free for 6 months.
what about matrix?
Pick the server with the coolest name from the top of the list where all columns are green. Some of them don't support in-line registration though
conversations.im
can i use xmpp for voip?
Yeah, because the owner of a company would totally be like "Yeah guys we report your data to the feds every Tuesday" when he's legally forced not to do so
At this point he is captain of the new Titanic
