I like home servers. I need to order a bunch of HDDs soon though, 130TB is not enough!

how is this shit not catching fire

I don't know but it's been up almost 24/7 for about two years now

Cardboard ignites at like 180c. If you have computer parts that get that hot you have larger issues than an electrical fire.

What do you host on it?

More like 450c. I had to look that up.

>Cardboard ignites at like 180c.

i learned something new. what a productive day

I use it for file hosting and one of my friends uses it to host a webpage.

you host a webpage on a home server? How's that uptime?

I don't track it, but it rarely goes down. my IP rarely changes

Are you trying to archive the internet ? What are you storing with all that ?

What are you using it for and why do you need that amount of space? Just curious

Got one running in my basement along with all networking gear/cable modem. Ain't much far as storage goes (12TB) but hey it works and gives me no problems which is the whole point.
Specs:
OS - Windows Home Server 2011 (2008R2 based, latest security patch will install on it fine)
Ram - 8GB
HDD: 1TB (OS/Client Backups) 9TB (Raid 5/Data) 2TB (Raid 1/Data)
Cpu: FX 8300
Client pcs get backed up once a day on automatic, sleep mode don't matter any, backup time comes the server will "wake" it, run backup job, then put it back to "sleep" These backups are retained for 1 year. One day a week the server will run a cleanup task that will purge old backups and thus keep drive space from being a issue.
The server's data volumes is backed up to a 12TB Raid 5 nas. A 2nd copy of core data is kept on another 4TB nas. Also keep a 2nd copy of my e-book/Porn collection on a 3TB external drive.Client backups/System image is also backed up/taken and is stored on 3TB external drive as well. The server/Network gear/ and Nas units are all attached to a UPS.

>server
>not headless
baka

Not trying to archive the internet, just the stuff that people otherwise wouldn't archive. Old BBS, IRC, gophersoaces, mailing lists, image board and small forums, FTP servers and all sorts of stuff. Its fun. I am working on building a web and gopher interface to make it public, but I need to save some money to pay for faster up speeds before that happens.
See above!

what os for the storage? zfs or?...

you mean location? it's a small bedroom within a shitty commieblock apartment in latvia.

Damn. Just how fucking loud is that rack?
I just got rid of an HP ProLiant G5 server last friday cos I just couldn't bear the noise anymore.

Yep, ZFS. I was running FreeBSD, but I just finished the migration on my SAN head to Alpine+ZFSonLinux.
Its noisy, but not unbareable. Those old proliants are a lot louder than the gear I am running. Its about 15 feet away from my desk and it doesnt bother be that much.

Just bought a C2750D4I recently. Running OMV

i'm in middle of nowhere rural area and my isp keeps everyone behind within a subnet behind a single IP. although cheap as fuck and good service in general, that is a drawback.

what's a decent VPN that gives a static ip so i can host some websights making them available to the outer world? is nVpn.net any good?

Attached: 1496333138745.jpg (660x575, 49K)

Any VPN with a port forwarding service. I'd share my VPN provider but it's pretty lowkey and i've used it for 8 years for hosting shady shit and never got caught. So, here's hoping you find a good one.

>Elementary OS
Mac Fag detected.

Just quietly I love elementary OS so good choice, but it's lack of settings in the DE and the control the devs put onto the system to limit admin tasks is annoying. Why not a headless Debian though?

What made you want to switch from FreeBSD to Linux?

Maybe he likes hugs?

Recent politics, and I got kicked off the dev team for the projects I was working on over at FreeBSD, so I would rather not support the project any more.

As a follow up, I am now contributing over at the DragonflyBSD project, which has a few nice guys attached to it, but their software RAID solution is not as powerful as I would like for this amount of data.

Thats not a server, thats a shitbox

Although technically a server, thats a shitbox too

Perfect thread. Will my old dual core 2GHz laptop handle running pihole, transmission and smb server?

Attached: 1507543035912.jpg (1024x770, 51K)

So it's a safe alternative if I'm too poor to buy computer case?

While it is safe, it is still considered a fire hazard as cardboard burns easily. Do something like pic related

Attached: lDolP.jpg (500x527, 99K)

Imagine cleaning it from dust, even once a week will be annoying.

Yeah, it will. I've setup a Celeron 450 with 2GB DDR2 as a File Server and AD server at my company.

>paper burns at 230c
>cardboard, which is made from paper, magically ignites 50 degrees cooler
Hmmmm....

Great, it also has 2GB ddr2 ram but I won't be sharing really big filles on it so it should be fine.
What would be the best way of doing this though? I was thinking Debian or obonto server with transmission and samba installed. How should I add pihole? Can it run natively? Should I do it in a VM instead?

I don't run a server, but I am wondering how you all actually use your servers. I'm certainly no expert, but I can't think of much of a reason to run a home server beyond torrenting+hosting those files on a home network that you access with multiple systems. How am I being a brainlet here?

I use a Pi 3 for web hosting, Syncthing and SSHFS, but I'm planning to buy an used server with at least a Xeon E5 for heavier stuff. Problem is, I have the money but I'm also a jew

I have one. Everyone makes fun of it because
>mITX inside full ATX case
But it was originally inside of an mITX case. It just outgrew it and I wanted the drives to run cooler. Pic isn't up to date. Since added an 8TB drive and turned the other drives into 3 separate RAID 1 setups. Running Windows 7.

Attached: LRM_EXPORT_20170827_190416.jpg (2048x1152, 1.42M)

>SSHFS and syncthing
So, accessing and syncing your local systems? The web hosting is pretty obvious, I guess it's just whether it's your own project site or what.

I mean you could put it in a more enclosed plastic box I guess.

what am i, a millionaire?

pi-hole.net/

Yeah, it'll run just fine. I think they made a mistake with their name... If you control + f and "1. INSTALL A SUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEM" you'll a list of... supported OS.

Anyway, Debian is the way to go, if you don't have anything better to do with the laptop, just install it physically.

congratulations, you have a server now

I'd post a pic of my server, but I'm not home. So here's a pic from Google.

It's a Fujitsu Q956 (i5-6500t, 8GB RAM).

It's small, it runs gayme servers, it streams Plex, it sips power and I can only hear it when it's under load.
I like it a lot.

Right now it runs Windows 10, but I know that's fucking retarded, so I'll install Proxmox when I'm home.

Imagine being this much of a brainlet

do you have downs syndrome?

Imagine knowing so little about servers, you can't possibly comprehend why you'd want a GPU.

Just kill yourself.

Syncthing for my smartphone and SSHFS from my laptop and desktop. I like writing and it's a really comfy setup

Here's my shit. It's a gaming pc for my projector, it's my seedbox and my webserver, which now runs inbound email (since the ISP blocks outgoing mail). It's running W10 but the server is a vmware virtual machine running Ubuntu 17.10 with its own network adapter. The server shares my torrents to the outside network so me and my friends can either stream or download them.

I'm not a sysadmin, I really don't know how to make this shit secure or elaborate, I'm running the VM as a safety measure to prevent getting hacked. All the shared material are shared to the VM from the host with read permits only. This is the only machine in my household that has some ports forwarded. If someone hacks my shit, which is possible since I don't really know too much about how to harden my server against attacks, they can only access the zero information virtual machine, which is backed up, so returning it isn't much of a job.

Originally I did this all because I wanted to watch my torrents when I wasn't home, and I used to have a website that hosted reaction images to my Sup Forums friends. I got pretty tired of using FTP and shitty, restricted free sites, so I decided I'll just put together a machine of my own and run it that way.

Despite this ham fisted approach I've learned a lot even to the point of considering studying system administration. I just don't know how much I should already know before considering studying this field. Next up my self learning list is php and mysql. What I hope to do most, at this point, is to create a music player that works on the website. Right now I can only play one track at a time through the apache index. Not convenient.

Python + Flask is non-cancer and Sup Forums approved.

Used to. It used "too much power".

how much do they cost? and what does it cost to power it?

reporting in

my mainboard doesn't have many SATA-ports.

Should I buy a PCI-E card with 2 SAS ports and then use SAS-to-SATA breakout cables for 8 SATA ports or buy a PCI-E 10 SATA port card

I do software raid pls thanks in advance

Attached: 2018-03-25 23.08.16.jpg (1500x846, 268K)

Which one is cheaper? Usually I find that the used SAS cards are less expensive.

Thanks for the detailed response. I've heard great things about HAMMER on DragonflyBSD, though my understanding is that it's more immature than ZFS, so probably not a good solution for those who are more conservative with their data. I've been meaning to take a deeper dive into the less popular BSDs, since I've heard good things about them as systems, but haven't made the time. Personally, I use FreeBSD on my server, but have contemplated switching to Linux at various points since the system is a little more familiar to me and has broader support, so I was just wondering what your reasons were.

i've got email, send me mail xd

What's your chess rating?

MacPro 1.1 I got for free.
Had a bad gpu, think it was a x1950 or 1900.
Replaced with a HD4870, and added Ram.

Just runs game servers. Ark, Minecraft, 7 Days to Die, etc.

Bless your soul user, I just love hoarders.

Isn't that just a meme occupation? Like it isn't even a thing.
Just for argument's sake, what do you DO?

on a shelf at the closest grocery store.

friend tried to teach me when we were kids (his russian-speaking stepdad had thought him), along with bunch of card games.. only managed to remember checkers.

It makes watching movies and listening to music a much nicer experience thanks to everything stored at a central location and via DNLA server. Makes constant need to insert a disc a thing of the past and you can keep your discs safe from damage. Can stream your library to anything long as it has DNLA capability or you can even access it/watch it over the Internet from anywhere. Plus you gain much needed shelf space to once you pack away all your discs.

Sure you are, sweetheart :)

I picked up a Perc H310 a few weeks ago, works great with MDADM. Was like $30 and $15 for two breakout cables.
