I've listened to nothing but rock music and its subgenres for my whole life. How do I into hip-hop/rap? What are the essential albums?

Kanye

Start of with Illmatic OP

...

Seriously bitch

...

Just do it before I start getting upset

Listen to this, Other electronic stuff is more interesting.

Why hip hop?

There are tons of genres you could choose, why pick one of the shittiest?

Unironically he's right

start with this album, OP

Worry not, OP. Start with this list.

You may (and SHOULD) skip any Kanye album, though.

>all that dusty, irrelevant boom-bap

You trying to turn OP off of the genre before he even gets a chance?

Why?

It's just a meme

define meme

an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation

N.W.A. and Wu-Tang Clan are essential
After that, check out the rest of that chart few post s above me

in this case viral advice based on some conception of what a proper introduction to rap/hiphop would consist/ not consist of

This

Most hiphop made before the 2000s is shit

Only if you want cancer, OP.

More like the cure

literally don't waste your time. there's enough rock out there for a lifetime that is worthwhile listening to instead of niggers rapping about how much money they have and how big their dicks are. I've listened to lots of hip hop but don't listen to it any more, it's all the same shit. just ego bragging. waste of time.

thou shalt not claim I am but a boom-bap

You use hiphop as a basis to get into other genres when you're getting into music OP not the other way around

But if you insist listen to MBDTF unironically

Damn you're right

my bad senpai

You have to be at least 18 to post on here kiddo.

I'm just saying start him off with more recent stuff instead of just copy-pasting an old chart

Skip rap and listen to instrumental hip hop and turntablism

I disagree, he should start from the oldies (for lack of a better term) to the newer stuff
Every new song today sounds the same, at least back then lyricism was more of a thing to make up for the genres repetitiveness
Sure, there's still some interesting artists like NAH or Billy Woods, etc , but overall Hip-Hop has downgraded
Sad to say, but the meme is true (for the most part)
Anyway OP, listen to the old stuff first and then work your way up

Iust listen to mbdtf, it is the perfect hip-hop for a rock fan.

He is not listening from a perspective of never having listened to much music. He is a guy who knows rock music, and has gone deep into it. Your goal shouldn't be what are the best hip-hop albums, you should pick ones a rock fan could like.

The things I like in hip hop are completely unlike the things I like in rock. What kind of hip hop albums "could" a rock fan even like? Public Enemy? Beastie Boys? Neither of those could really get me excited, then and now.

OP if you're like me, listen to A Tribe Called Quest. That's what finally did it for me.

Here's the classics as dictated by Sup Forums.

Lil Wayne - Tha Carter 3
Kanye West - 808s and Heartbreaks
Mos Def - The Ecstatic
Freddie Gibbs - Baby Face Killa

my first old-school listens were illmatic, sun rises in the east and only built 4 cuban linx. it may not work for anyone though. i recommend starting with Sup Forumscore like kendrick, MF Doom-Madvillain, kanye maybe and DJ Shadow, and then move your way to more hardcore stuff.

>MBDTF Top Ten

Ew

wtf
are you being serious?

this is correct

wtf is kanye go listen to some real shit "Gangstarr"
"Pete Rock & CL Smooth"
"Big L"

start with madvilliany
