What's the deal with the sound of The Smiths? A band that wrote "How Soon Is Now?" would definitely be in my top-10, if only the same band didn't write "Frankly Mr. Shankly". They go from almost shoegaze level of greatness to sounding like a fucking joke.

They got so great by not pandering to clueless twats such as yourself. Go to bed.

>Implying Smiths is a great band

Frankly Mr. Shankly is meant to be humorous.

Fame fame fatal fame

yeah, Frankly Mr Shankly is a joke. It's like saying R.E.M are shit because they wrote Shiny Happy People.

>implying

"Frankly Mr. Shankly" is probably the best song in TQID
"How Soon Is Now?" is not even that good

>being this contrarian

>not legitimately enjoying Frankly Mr. Shankly on first listen
Damn, sucks to not like good music.

OK, I mean take "Stop Me…" for example. Ethereal opening, great structure, great melody. But the rest of the "Strangeways…" has nothing like it.

>shoegaze level of greatness

Yikes. That tells us everything about you, right there.

>i started something i couldn't finish
>not great

Disagree, Paint a vulgar picture is right up there with it IMO

Wow, just as I thought. Smiths fans are smug pretentious assholes. Shit joke band, shit joke fans.

Must suck to not being able to get the greatest jangle group of all time
And this comes from a huge shoegaze fan
Oh well

Be honest with us here lad, are you Mr. Shankly by any chance ?

Yeah, all that variety sure sucks. Shame about all those sterling, intricately layered 12-string guitar lines too. They could've been great if they made fairy music.

>getting this triggered

>And this comes from a huge shoegaze fan
Yikes. That tells us everything about you, right there.

Unhappy Birthday is the most off-hand slice of misanthropy ever dished out by a sentient being. Understated but bone-deep.

Well yes, it tells I like shoegaze. Feel free to deduce whatever you want using pseudo-analysis though.

> 'last night i dreamt' isn't the musical equivalent of the feels guy.

The fact the you call any Smiths song shoegaze proves that you're moron

Threadly reminder that The Cure is vastly superior to the Smiths

Learn to read fucktard, I'm not OP. I love the Smiths. How Soon Is Now isn't really shoegaze, it just uses lots of effects, hence OP's mistake.

I actually agree but I was talking solely about sound. Lyrically I agree Smiths are amazing almost always. And actually Last Night I Dreamt is great musically too

They did everything in THREE YEARS and then were gone. No other band has made such a large impact in so short a time.

>Marr's guitar work
>DOSE bass lines
>that tight ass drumming
nah son they're as good musically as they are lyrically. Every member of the band is talented as fuck and contributed immensely to their sound.

yeah it's a kick in the balls if you're not feeling up to things.

>"almost shoegaze level of greatness"
> OP's mistake
> telling others to learn to read
yeah sure buddy

Nah. No matter which way you want to argue it's tight, to say one is VASTLY SUPERIOR. Just no.

Jimi Hendrix's career lasted one year and a half

I mean, I feel it all on Barbarism Begins At Home, Queen Is Dead, Cemetery Gates, How Soon Is Now, Pretty Girls Make Graves, and so on. But Vicar in a Tutu and Mr. Shankly sound like a joke, almost circus music.

Sorry what do you mean

well damn you're right. *tips fez*

They are 100% intended as jokes

just that on occasion when one feels psychologically frail that song would be the last thing you'd listen to.

'joke' probably isn't right in the usual sense, but they're certainly black humour, in a very brit way. except for 'how soon is now', which doesn't fit in the list.

2 songs with joke sound is a bit too much for an album with 10 songs, don't you think?

fuck my old boots. they were just kids.

Yeah man totally, never said I liked them

No, I'd actually say they are good enough that they transcend that threshold of being "songs to listen to in a certain mood", luckily. The problem is that the other songs sound almost like circus music to me and it pisses me off immensely.

>implying shiny happy people isn't one of their best songs

Agree.

>Meat is Murder
>s/t
>Strangeways
>Queen is Dead
>Hatful of Hollw

>Seventeen Seconds
>Faith
>Pornography
>Disintegration
>Wish
>Bloodflowers

It's incredibily tight. They are both too fucking good.

I'm gonna argue The Cure is more ahead because bob isn't as insufferable and can write something that isn't "HAHAHA, I'M A POMPOUS ASSHOLE, NOW FUCK YOU!"

Meme meme metal meme

>almost shoegaze level of greatness
is this a meme?

Pornography and The Smiths self titled album are 2 of my absolute favourites, pure class

I actually decided to listen to their self-titled debut because I heard it was actually their best. I liked it, they took themselves more seriously in a way, although they became more proficient later

Checked. You described it pretty well, it was more straightforwardly "sad" and downbeat, not as cynical and playful like their latter stuff. I'd say Hatful of Hollow shares that with the s/t.

Shoegaze is shit. Literally a gimmick
Frankly Mr shankly has great lyrics.
Girlfriend in a coma dude

What pretentiousness? Good ableism right here!

The cure has far more albums and far many holes in in them. Only 3 of like 11
are of any worth
Same here. Beautiful music.

The sad smiths is great but who doesn't love the dark humoured cunt morrisey?

>people actually hate Frankly, Mr. Shankly

>Only 3 of like 11 are of any worth
>what is + 3 Imaginary Boys

>Shoegaze is shit
Shoegaze is the tits m8. What albums did you listen?

Yeah I think they perfected their sound by adding Moz's dark humoured cuntery. I mean this in the best possible way.

Their good songs are better but their bad ones are so much worse than the Smiths. Robert Smith is still way cooler than any of them though

Should've typed "Speak frankly, lad, are you Mr. Shankly by any chance?

Ive listened to astrobite, lush, chapterhouse, lcd and the search of God, pale saints and bunch of other 90s bands. Also some more ambienty bands that I cant be fucked looking the names of. They were really bland to me . None of these bands sound any different or do anything special. Whirr is ok. Deerhunter is ok . Jesus and they Mary chain are God awful.

Mbv, slowdive, ride and pinkshiny are decent though.

What makes him so cool? Morrisey seems more like a charachter to me than Rob.

A lot of 90's shoegaze is bland as fuck imo, I see where you might be getting at. Also don't really like Astrobrite, their songwriting is subpar most of the time.
Check out Weed, KARION:Irse;, loveliescrushing, Sweet Trip, Faunts, Glifted, Medicine's Shot Forth Self Living, Angelic Process, Goslings, Xinlisupreme, Aquarelle, that Bilinda Butcher's EP and Lift To Experience if you feel like it.

>Shoegaze is shit. Literally a gimmick

I said 'shoegaze', but I meant MBV. There's not much really good shoegaze IMO, but the best examples are to me the best music ever made.

>Frankly Mr shankly has great lyrics.
> The sad smiths is great but who doesn't love the dark humoured cunt morrisey?

Again, I absolutely love lyrics in Smiths songs. But it's not a thread about lyrics. It's solely about the sound.

I don't know, I think it kind of works. In general, but especially on TQID they always have kind of an underlying sarcasm in their songs, so it kinda makes sense to push some of the humour to the forefront of a couple songs. It doesn't inherently ruin them by being "joke tracks", but gives it kinda a more lighthearted or almost ironic vibe

You don't like Mr. Shankly? It's so charming and funny.

>It's solely about the sound.
The arrangement and melody are goofy as a way of emphasizing the flippant, dismissive attitude of the words. The song works as a cohesive unit.

>he shits on astrobrite and LSD but likes ride

I think I just got cancer.

pail saints tho - comforts of madness is a lost classic.

>A Rush and a Push
>Last Night I Dreamt
>Girlfriend in a Coma
>I Started Something
>Paint a Vulgar Picture

Bangers aplenty

no one's cooler than Marr

>implying they're not

Astrobrite? More like astroshite!

Ride's just as bad

Astrobrite is pretty decent I find. I like that their sound is a lot more noisy and unhinged, the sea of feedback and distortion doesn't match how tight and gracefully controlled as Loveless, but still worth a listen in my mind. However, I will agree that Ride is absolute garbage.

>What makes him so cool?
He's not a pretentious cunt like Morrissey, he's more humble, and he ate acid like candy
I guess

how tight and gracefully controlled Loveless is*

You know what, IMO—fuck this goofy shit. Ironically shitty sound is still shitty sound. There's a reason pure comedy rock is scoffed at. I don't say anything about the melodies—Smiths had amazing musicians. Same goes for lyrics. But the sound just ruins it all.

>A Rush and a Push
Circus sound
>Last Night I Dreamt
Good, not shoegaze but very good still
>Girlfriend in a Coma
Actually forgot about it. Good song
>I Started Something
The fucking trumpets or whatever these are ruin the sound
>Paint a Vulgar Picture
Yawn. The Smiths song #58 v2.

dude ppl are just mad you're escaping from the matrix. realizing the shitstain that is majority of smiths tracks is a prime indicator.....

>people are mad at me because i'm right!

I wish I could go through life like that.

So what's the best Smiths album and why is it The Queen Is Dead?

>shoegaze level of greatness

Yawning at the GOAT, definitely just a child from those ugly new houses

no no. just a recognition of the human limits of a supposed "icon".......ppl make a good piece of art then suddenly think everything they shit out has worth

Hatful of Hollow. I know it's a compilation but it's the best. TQID is a close second.

Frankly Mr. Shankly is good you plebeian

The Smiths had bad songs, yes. I don't think anyone but the most diehard fans would deny that. I mean their debut album, is, to me, almost totally unlistenable. Morrissey's falsetto is so fucking bad on it that I can't help but laugh. They're still great though.

I'll forgive you two for being wrong as you seem like nice enough fellas, and I'll let you finish, but the self titled album is the best

haven't listened to the smiths at all besides random songs desu
What albums are the best?

>almost shoegaze level of greatness

thank you OP

DELETE THIS

>there are nu-Sup Forums posters who actually think 'circus sound' is a valid criticism

>unlistenable
Hand in glove,miserable lie,still ill
>unlistenable
1v1 me m8

Louder than bombs for an intro I'd say as it's a compilation, then have a listen of the respective albums for the songs you like.

Look don't get me wrong, the self titled album is great, but it can't compare to the consistency and just how many great tracks they put into it. Even the weakest track (Vicar in a Tutu) is still pretty damn good.

I'm sorry you think you're right user, but The Queen Is Dead is clearly the superior album.

>I said 'shoegaze', but I meant MBV. There's not much really good shoegaze
This is such a fucking stale meme. Go to /shugazi/ threads, they're more than welcome to give you some recs. I'm constantly amazed at how much great shoegaze there is out there. The "all shoegaze is MBV clones" thing is nothing but a myth,

but I hate compilation albums. I'll just start with the self titled one

Louder Than Bombs isn't really a compilation album in the truest sense. The Smiths are famous for releasing a great deal of singles that never made it onto albums despite their high quality. Louder Than Bombs is basically most of their songs that never found a home on a proper album. Would still recommend The Queen Is Dead as a first album though

Just have to agree to disagree on this one pal, got an exam in eight hours so I'll catch yas later

> The "all shoegaze is MBV clones" thing is nothing but a myth,
Did I imply that? I like and enjoy a lot of other stuff I come upon. MBV is simply the brightest star of shoegaze

its as valid a reference point as cabaret, cuckface

WHY DONT ALL THE SONGS ON THIS ALBUM SOUND THE SAME?!?!

Go back to listening to your autist pop 40 radio where everything has a similar slightly trap influenced beat you fucking twat and let us enjoy our variety

"missing the point" doesn't even begin to describe your post u fucking clown

No need to be a pretentious cunt mate, pricks like you spoil the board. Everyone's got different ears, brains, and opinions all of which are valid, even if you disagree with them

>tfw no one else thinks this is 10/10

Frankly Mr Shankly is sick and you're wrong.

It's weird how not much else in their discography sounds like this album, even though it's arguably them at their finest
