my dad played dad rock for me a lot when I was a kid and it shaped my tastes and inspired me to learn different instruments and study music.
mainly early pink floyd, black sabbath and led zeppelin.

I got really into the Beatles when I was like 12 because my dad had all of their albums on vinyl despite not being really into them. I ended up learning dozens of their songs and it was a turning point for me when I decided to really focus on music.

Dadrock of my childhood included Floyd, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, Sabbath, Beatles, Clapton, old U2 albums, Yes, Jethro Tull, Dire Straits, Jan-Michael Jarre, Tangerine dream...
Also golden oldies like, iunno, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson and Sade and such.
Everything was on vinyl.

My first solo music endeavors were pretty much Nu-metal oriented [papa roach, POD, Limp Bizkit, Mudvayne, Korn etc...], but by the end of high school I was deep in post-rock/metal, industrial and extreme metal genres.
Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull are definitely my dad-bands of choice. I still listen to them from time to time.

As for "my", he likes Mastodon and ISIS.

dad likes nightwish, evanessence and similar "metal" bands and some rock

mom likes musicals and "whatevers on the radio"

How it differs? They dont like anything i like, and I dont like what they like

dad likes typical dad rock along with really shitty modern country rock mixed in with cheesy 80s hair bullshit

my mother listens to whatever, she has no taste in music

My dad listens to whatever was popular in the 80's, his taste hasn't really developed from when he was a teenager.
My mom used to just listen to whatever's on the radio but recently she started practicing yoga, traveling to India and she's become "spiritual" so she listenes to traditional music from SE asia and mystical prayer music. Honestly it's pretty rad.
I think there going through there mid life crisis.

my mother likes hardcore punk, shoegazer stuff and also ska
we can usually agree on songs that we both like, although i don't spend a lot of time listening to that kind of thing

i haven't seen my dad in years but when i was younger he was into Elvis Presley and whatever the name for this kind of twee techno-pop is youtube.com/watch?v=N5XZludvaPs

My parents listen to that modern country that's played on the radio and it's pretty terrible. Based off the fact that I'm on mu you can probably guess how different our tastes are... I discovered all this mu type music by myself and through friends. my parents used to have more dad rock tastes when they were younger but the past five years or so it's been all country music. They enjoy playing it in the car and in the house over the stereo all the time too. It sucks

>all these kids whose parents listened to 80s music

Are you all 13?

I only know 2 guys that ventured outside radio so its almost impossible to someone share taste to me.

Mainstream music is just 0.01% or less of all music, when you know underground music, its STATISTICALLY UNLIKELY that your taste will have anything from those 0.01%

my parents listen to various middle eastern musics

i listen (mostly) to indie/noise rock or punk so i guess that's kinda different but not that much

surely their parents were teenagers in the 80s, making them middle-aged now

Dad is obsessed with classical, Mum isn't really that into music aside from pop. Both really like Talking Heads, which is our common ground musically. I like some classical music, but prefer 20th century when my dad only really likes classical and romantic stuff.

my dad likes a lot of new wave from the 80s, like devo and boomtown rats.

My mom has almost no interest in music and listens to christian radio.

>Mainstream music is just 0.01% or less of all music, when you know underground music, its STATISTICALLY UNLIKELY that your taste will have anything from those 0.01%

Assuming you listen to 100 artists the chance is 1%

But obviously underground music have some genres that never had even one mainstream musician, if that is what you would love if you know, you will automatically dont listen to mainstream music

>if that is what you would love if you know, you will automatically dont listen to mainstream music

what did he mean by this?

If you would love to listen to as some example cybergrind, drone doom metal, math rock, and pornogrind, but dont know that those sub-genres exist
when you discover they exist you will automatically decrease the chance of you listening to mainstream music to zero.

The thing is that there is no cybergrind, pornogrind, math rock, drone doom metal artists that are mainstream.

So, depending of the genres you like, the chance of you liking mainstream music is 0%.

can you please post pic of your dad pls

my dad likes stuff like Eric Clapton, Foo Fighters and The Eagles

mom's more into Janis Joplin and Fleetwood Mac and a lot of old Americana type stuff

Neither of my parents were really the ones that got me into music or influenced my tastes much. My older brother was the one that I looked up to as far as music goes... He's always been into 90's indie and "lofi", which definitely impacted my tastes since he shared his cassettes / cd's with me growing up.

Dad likes classic rock, blues, and occasional jazz, and mom likes classic rock and shitty modern country. I got some pretty good stuff from them like Zeppelin Floyd Hendrix Beatles etc

Dad likes Elvis, pop country and various 60s and 70s bands. Mom likes Depeche Mode but generally doesn't listen to music.

I like Depeche Mode but most of the stuff they listen to is pretty surface level and they don't really know much lesser known stuff either from the past or now.
