Leviathan - The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide

Weakling - Dead as Dreams

Wolves in the Throne Room - Celestial Lineage

My three.

Transylvanian Hunger
Under the Sign of Hell
Battles in the North

weakling - dead as dreams
sacramentum - far away from the sun
absu - tara

Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Weakling - Dead as Dreams

It's hard to pick just three albums since black metal has a wide Varity.
Good choices for USBM

You can't pick just 3 black metal albums, the genre has such immense variety that you really need to listen to a fuck ton of black metal albums before you get anywhere near a complete picture of it. That said

Die Mysteriis dom Satanas
Filosofem
Pure Holocaust

if you don't enjoy pure holocaust get the fuck off of black metal

if you listen to only one black metal album ever, make it this one.

I really don't get all the love for the Mayhem album. Their demo is much better, and even then I wouldn't give it that kind of accolade.

>if you don't enjoy pure holocaust get the fuck off of black metal
Agreed. Back in the day when my car had a 1 disc CD player, I'd have Pure Holocaust on repeat.

>I really don't get all the love for the Mayhem album.
I think it's the heavy guitars and vocal variety that makes it stand out. Don't agree? Go find me an album that is A) BM B) variety of vocals C) "heavy". It's pretty fucking easy to find some that meet two of these (Arcturus is quintessential A + B) but all 3 is a bit harder.

I can agree on all those accounts, I just don't think it does anything all that well. Variety is fantastic, but the quality of that variety isn't that good IMO.

Top 3
Alcest - Écailles de Lune ( barely bm though )
Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter
Peste Noire - L'ordure à l'état pur

I've been listening to black metal for a long time and my favourites in the genre are:

1. Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
2. Ulver - Nattens Madrigal
3. Leviathan - The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide

Grand Declaration Of War
Ugra-Karma
Ravishing Grimness

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss

Absurd - Facta Loquuntur

ALSO since I just remembered:
Bathory
Impaled Nazarene - Ugra Karma
Rotting Christ - Passage to Arcturo

>tfw nobody ever posts about satyricon
I know it sucks that they literally sold out but I love some of their earlier albums.

I loved the quiet flute and strings parts.

Filosofem
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
A Blaze in the Northern Sky

Factually the three best.

Dead killing himself before the recording of De Mysteriis is probably the best thing that happened to black metal.

mah nigguh. Satyricon's first album is one of my favourite black metal records, it just perfectly captures that "old & cold" atmosphere that so many band struggle to create. Truly a masterpiece.

Satyricon is one of the most mediocre black metal bands even to date, how anyone would consider their albums great is stuck in the past and is a second wave hardass hipster, because Emperor has them beat in every regard

There's nothing more KVLT than Darkthrone

Peste Noire - La Sanie Des Siècles - Panégyrique De La Dégénérescence
youtube.com/watch?v=LiJPOKeQ2Yk
I just love Famine vocals, and that melody that goes through all the album is sick. Listen to Dueil Angoisseus, my fave song from this album

Grand Belial's Key - Mocking the philanthropist
youtube.com/watch?v=dEMhvCCVW_8
Fucking GBK is such a riff machine, with some mix of heavy metal and black metal.

Hope you enjoy these albums as me

Nordglanz - Von Helden Und Händlern

Lateposting to say that this is a great album, just not something i would rec to a newbie

How about some melodic black metal like Watain - Sworn to the Dark or Melechesh - Emissaries? That stuff's good but also more accessible.

Some Finnish ("3rd wave") black metal also deserves a mention. At least check out Sargeist's Satanic Black Devotion and/or Let the Devil In.

Also, maybe some more brutal bands to show what the genre is capable of: Swallowed (Fin), Nyogthaeblisz, Blasphemy, etc.

Also...
This album is so dull.

The best answer is objectively:

Immortal - Pure Holocaust
Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
Burzum - Filosofem

These 3 albums are all classics of the genre and all represent the epitomes of the important musical qualities which frequently occur in black metal.

PH is the epitome of cold mayhemic blizzard riffs and endless blast beats, creating the "trapped in a snowstorm" effect.

TH as a masterpiece example for the raw lo-fi minimalistic side of the genre.

Lastly, Filosofem epitomizes the atmospheric aspects of black metal by creating absolutely unique and never replicated walls of distorted sound and eerie synths.

quite nice tastes in this thread

check out these:
Falls Of Rauros - The Light That Dwells In Rotten Wood
Nasheim - Solens Vemod
Paysage d'Hiver - Das Tor
Abigor - Leytmotif Luzifer
Thorns - s/t
