Why 70s prog bands went full-on shit in the 80s?

Why 70s prog bands went full-on shit in the 80s?

pic very related

because they failed to adapt

It's not just prog bands. The Who's two albums in the 80s were shit too.

>falling for the reunion meme

They weren't Yes.

the thread's not just about Yes you meme addict

Because Bruford wasn't in that band in the 80s.

Because they jumped on new wave bandwagon
Funnily neo-prog bands like Marillion and IQ made better Genesis albums than Genesis did

but he wasn't in the band during most of the 70s either, and they released Tales, Relayer, Going For The One during that time, all of which were really good. They even released Drama in 1980, and that was a pretty solid album.

Rock in general went full shit in the 80's.

That's actually a decent album
Big Generator was worse

...

beat was pretty good too imo

This, but they started in the 60s

The 80's was the golden age of Progressive rock

>in general
The 80s underground rock music scenes were incredible.

Marillion is watered-down Genesis

It also happened to jazz (particularly fusion) artists of the 70s.

The 80s is where a lot of the artists and bands of the 60s and 70s went to die. It got much better in the late 80s though.

Punk and new wave killed prog's popularity, so they tried (and failed) to adapt, with the exception of King Crimson.

>Sonic Youth

>Shit

I know some of these bands started in the 70s, but they put out good stuff in the 80s too.

Because Nixon helped instill the drug/pills culture of the mid 70's-80's, which distracted people from what they were talking about, making them irrelevant. I also think the death of Alan Watts helped kill off prog.

Nixon had jack shit to do with it, it was the CIA you uneducated mong

Yeah. Genesis didn't have tons of hits in the '80s. They sure failed to adapt.

Everything that was popular prior went to shit in the 80's

As did Yes. Hell, even Rush formed in 1968

But he was in a prog band in the '80s.

that album is a fucking great pop album though

They failed to adapt in a not shit way

This album wasn't shit though.

>Abacab
>'83 s/t
>Duke

Shit

because shitlords wanted dark social political bullshit when the cool kids were fucking keyboards

>selling out to become a commercial pop band
>good

Peter Gabriel did the exact same thing. Why does Genesis get all of the shit for it?
