Haven't posted in these threads in a while desu. Are they still really bad?

they've gotten even worse, if you can believe it

Sad. Someday they can get better though, r-right?

nice 5s, however, yes, they have gotten worse and have been reduced to a general memery and teen drama. No one tries to have a discussion anymore.

rateyourmusic.com/~Myskinn

Wew. I'm not surprised desu. These threads were never really that good anyway.

ciao Gentili

Yeah I know, I still hope in some pious soul to revive the spirit of communion and discussion RYM naturally offers.

what is it with every bjork fan on rym being the biggest fucking asshole?

OP here, am I an asshole? :(

are you a bjork fan?

I appreciate most of her work, yes.
Even if her last three albums were essentially shit.

were you born in le wrong generation?

oh darling save the last dance for me

great meme le wrong generation i watch filthy frank and go on reddit

of course not, but I think it's quite impulsive to rate an album which has been published just a few months ago as one of the greatest of all time

>implying rating should be objective
>implying rating could be objective

unless you're rating based on some other criteria than personal evaluation of quality, a few months is plenty of time to decide to give a 5 to a piece of music

I'm not contesting neither of your points. I just was thinking about the fact that I usually tend to rate an album a 5/5 only and solely when I can recognize it as an album I can't live without and has grown with me. I obviously do not know how much this person has listened to that album and how much his/her love for it has grown in those months, but I honestly doubt that in five, ten or twenty years he/she could still say "that's my album, that's what made me what I am as a listener"

Lindsey Stirling is such garbage

yes, that's true and i agree with you, but most users use 5/5 differently (from what i've seen)

Hey boldfaure what are some classical red flags?

rateyourmusic.com/collection/boldfaure/stag/classical (effectively 5.5)/

Fuck off Montie/bkb

Your beatle ratings are fucking awful fix that please

I hate montie and I have no idea who bkb is

I've come here to rate you.
Pretty good taste.
Bad.
Horrible.
Average.
People who don't know about music think you are patrician/10
Also. decent.

One of the easiest tells for a classical hack is the pronounced presence of Sonorist or other "drone-classical" such as Feldman, Scelsi, Lachenmann, etc. It's good music, but if their 5*'s include a preponderance of these pieces then it indicates a limited comprehension and appreciation of classical music.

ALSO VERY IMPORTANT IS RECORDING CHOICE. Plenty of mainstream recordings are good but plenty of the RYM picks for classical recordings are bad.
Let's talk about it.

t. JackAnderson94

Going off of recording choice, any person who has the Arditti recording of Schoenberg's Quartet is total hack material riding off of Doc Perkins. In general, anything rated by Doc Perkins in their 5*'s is probably also hack material.

I still don't understand your anger against von Karajan. I find his conduction of Beethoven's symphonic works to be one of the most incredible and precise recordings ever produced.

>pronounced presence of Sonorist or other "drone-classical" such as Feldman, Scelsi, Lachenmann
Feldman, Scelsi and Lachenmann are some of the best classical composers and sound artirsts of all time.

what the fuck did you say about me you little shit

I mean, have you heard the Kleibers, Klemperer, Furtwangler, and Toscanini? All these people I think produce recordings which are:
1. better performed
2. better conducted

Karajan's 60's cycle is decent and I have it rated as either 3.5 or 4.0 as a result, but outside of a few choice pieces/composers he's low-tier.

:)

I may agree with you with the Toscanini one, but I found Kleiber's interpretation of thet Fifth to be quite excessive, and that says a lot if it is compared to a bombastic director as von Karajan is. Plus, I don't think anyone has ever expressed so clearly the distinct early romantic intuitions that could be found in his later works better than him. I also think that he can move pretty well when directing stuff composed between 1810-1890, because he has a deep understanding of what was going on with orchestras at the time.
I never heard Klemperer or Futwangler yet, what would you suggest?

What's wrong with Arditti's rendition of Schoenberg's quartets?

>but I found Kleiber's interpretation of thet Fifth to be quite excessive
lolwhat? It's very measured and extremely well paced, what are you talking about? There's a reason it's universally considered the gold standard for the 5th.
>Plus, I don't think anyone has ever expressed so clearly the distinct early romantic intuitions that could be found in his later works better than him.
Romanticism is only one part of the Beethoven equation. Equally important are, as previously mentioned, a great skill for pacing in works that often can be rather formally "ramble-y," a great sense of rhythmic energy, and expressiveness from the soloists. None of which I think Karajan has. Particularly not the rhythmic energy.

Here's Karajan's recording of the 6th which is highly acclaimed on RYM: open.spotify.com/track/11YigXaFNjzST4L0HAaFv3

Very smoothed over and focused on beauty, as with all Karajan recordings.

Now, somebody focused more on the energy of Beethoven, Zinman: open.spotify.com/track/1GVkDqOmyfAXEnTeXm8WKY

It's a Pastoral symphony, it's shepherd's dance and common pleasure. It's not some high art endeavor in the vein of Mahler.

Arditti excels in the performance of technically difficult music but is quite lackluster in the performance of expressive classical pieces like Schoenberg.
The thing RYM doesn't understand is that Schoenberg was firmly attached to the classical tradition along with Berg.

Is Boulez' Webern the best all around or are there better performances for specific pieces?

One of the very few releases that reassures me that I should go ahead rating music, if for nothing else for the simple reason that the activity of rating music is like dreaming: its real functions are not at all available to awareness, it is ontologically impossible to tell someone (even and principally to self) what was the dream about without lying, and the ‘stars’ you assigned, supposed to graphically indicate your appraisal, will become, in a couple of seconds, unbearable leftovers of a state of mind about which you could be hardly held responsible, so long ago – chronologically and existentially -- you committed those ‘stars’ to the album page through your computer screen, no matter if in minutes or centuries since punched the rate on your keyboard.
Listen to Arnold Schoenberg’s gospel according to the Ardittis.

I have to confess that I haven't heard much Webern outside of the Boulez set (on Sony. Though the DG one is more comprehensive).
The fact that there have been so few Webern recordings since is, I think, a testament to the impassibility of those sets.
