Has anyone here ever had a file they've uploaded to mega get taken down due to copyright infringement? If so, what happened?

By the way, the people who issues the copyright infringement thing are IFPI.

Are they known for suing individuals over stuff like this?

Small fine.

How small are we talking here?

Does it matter depending on what the album is?

Only a couple thousand dollars. It wont break the bank.

A couple thousand?! Fuck.

You're taking into account that this is the IFPI right? It won't get any worse than this fine?

Ive only ever had problems with torrents.

once i was googling a lot of rutracker links to albums, and google started blocking my searches temporarily and nothing happened.

the other time i actually got an email from BMI because of one album in Autechre's discography I torrented. Nothing happened thankfully and I learned my lesson and buy all my music now.

lol

If they contact you about this, don't respond.
Most of the warnings are scare tactics

>get taken down due to copyright infringement?
>If so, what happened?

The first part answered it. It was taken down, that's all the happened.

This is why I use Spotify and Apple Music.

Even if it's the IFPI?

Should I at least go to a local lawyer?

>I learned my lesson and buy all my music now
Of course you do pal

nope don't respond at all

>he fell for the copyright meme

What are the possible consequences of not responding? Do they depend on the contents of the letter?

Are you new here? You're being trolled user. You should contact your local lawyer ASAP. The longer you wait the worse your sentence will be. If you continue the ignore tactic they'll bump it from a likely low 4 figure fine to possible jail time. The anons here just want you to fuck your life up.

Nope you should be fine as long as they don't contact you again. As said they're just trying to scare you but I would lay low on the torrents for a while unless you pony up for a VPN

post the letter

almost certainly nothing. when other anons are saying it's scare tactics they mean it, there's no legal precedence behind those types of letters 99% of the time and they just want a settlement.
I'd recommend actually researching this shit for yourself elsewhere though.

Nothing happens, it gets taken down and that's it.

I had Madeon - Adventure removed from my account. All I got was an e-mail saying they removed copyrighted content from my uploads list and that my account will be terminated if I persist. No mention of a fine or anything crazy like that. Other anons are probably just chucking out scares for the fun of it.

Well shit, I don't know who to believe. On the one hand, I should trust people on an anonymous site, but on the other I want to believe you guys so that my anxiety can be put to rest.

I should also probably note, that this all happened yesterday. I uploaded the file onto mega at about 10AM and it was removed when I checked at 6PM. I don't have a letter or anything to ignore just yet.

I'm really hoping that if it has to come to a settlement, it's extremely low for what settlements go. I definitely don't have the money to pay for this.

I really hope this is the case, I really do. But from what people have been saying, the IFPI will most likely go after me.

Yeah, exact same thing is happening to me. Except of course in my case it's an album that released just yesterday. Do you remember if the guys who sent Mega the notice are from IFPI?

I've only gotten one of those letters and it was for some shitty 2009 porno

The letter wanted me to pay $300 on some sketchy website to not take me to court but I never paid and nothing ever happened

*shouldn't trust

No, just Mega themselves, though it was to pass on the takedown. So the takedown itself could be from IFPI, but hell, if they really wanted your ass they'd just contact you directly.

Pic related was the e-mail I got

>the IFPI will most likely go after me.

Ask yourself, how will they go after you? First thing first before we continue.

dude

youll be fine

I'm not Mr. Panicky user m8

Oh shit dude, I got that same Takedown Notice. I had to use a lot of my student loan money to pay it off. I go to a community college, so I would only have around 8k in student debt, but now I have as much debt as a university student :/ just don' pirate music

u fackin' wot m8
I paid nothing. You either did something stupid or you're an unlucky sonofa.

damn boi

Hm, your one seems to be very slightly different from mine, probably because it's older.

Yeah, I haven't been directly contacted by anyone other than Mega with this email just yet.

Probably ask Mega for my IP Address, then find out what ISP I'm with, then ask my ISP for my address and details.

I hope so.

Honestly I would just wait and see if they try to contact you again

If it's been two weeks and you get nothing else I wouldn't worry about it

bro just send the IFPI an email and ask them if and how they're going to fuck you up if you're that worried

you're trying to get him in trouble kek

It'll be the longest two weeks of my life then. At least knowing the fact that guy who got the same notice and nothing happened to him makes me less anxious. My heartrate is stabilizing too.

You think so? Should I do it with my real email or the one I used with mega? That one has absolutely not of my personal info on it.

as another user said, the guy telling you to email them is fucking with you. that's like the worst possible course of action, it just confirms that you did it.
as people have been saying, if you ignore them they have jack shit they can do to you

>You think so? Should I do it with my real email or the one I used with mega? That one has absolutely not of my personal info on it.

DON'T DON'T DON'T REPLY, if you do you're admitting and unless they're bluffing, if you do reply they will seriously go after you.

Alright, thanks. Definitely not going to email them about it then.

definitely your real one. that way they'll know you're a sincere and honest guy. they'll respect that and you'll get on their good side

user why the fuck did you not use a VPN if you knew they could get your IP?

This also, 5-10usd a month, how much is a Mcdonald meal again?

I'm stupid, that's why. As soon as I'd sent out the link I realized I should have used a VPN.

Well mistakes happen I suppose, I doubt anything will come of it overall, especially if it wasn't online long before being taken down

Dude quit lying, everyone has to pay the man someday

I had the same issue with a U2 album removed from Mega: 1275$ fine.
My dad beated the shit out of me and it goes without saying that I use Mega no more.

Yeah, it must have gone down very quickly. I really hope nothing comes of this. I seriously contemplated suicide if it were to come to having to pay a ridiculous settlement amount, because I'd have nothing left if I had to do that. Then I realized how stupid that idea was.

Fuck, at least it wasn't a stupidly high amount. I could probably get away with paying $1300 if I starve myself for a few weeks.

At least it was your dad that beat you

Also just so you know the IFPI is a not for profit NGO, so they likely won't have legal authority to make you do anything either

>not-for-profit

That puts me slightly at ease, someone else in a thread said it was a for-profit organization. So although they probably wouldn't be seeking any legal consequences, they'd want to be paid a settlement. I probably should have looked up their wikipedia page beforehand.

Remember guys if you're sharing copyrighted material get:

1. VPN, it cost 5-10usd a month, depending on which service you are using
2. If you are uploading files on mega or any file-sharing websites, don't give an obvious name

The Beatles - Abbey Road = BAD

Homemade Gay Porn 5-10-2014 = GOOD

bTleS-bBoAr = GOOD

(some random numbers) = GOOD

You're sharing the mega link on sharethreads, so people already know what they're downloading because you already gave a name. There is no need to be specific in your mega or other file-sharing names.

Also don't worry OP, nothing will happen to you, they're just using a scare tactic that's all. Just lay off the torrent and downloading for a month if you're really that scare and see what happens.

If they demand money just don't pay them, they can't send the police to your door or anything. The worst they could do is try to take you to civil court to get a settlement, but it's not very likely they'll even attempt that.

Alright, thanks. Yeah, I should have thought about the common sense things when uploading. Also, would it have been safer to upload it to zippyshare or something?

It's a good thing GoT/Silicon Valley ended this week, got nothing I'd want to torrent anymore haha.

All trolling aside, this is the true post of how to pirate. Thanks for ruining the fun user.

Sorry for ruining your fun, I mean it, but I can feel that OP is legit scared and I don't want him to go crazy or something and start doing stupid shit.

>I can feel that OP is legit scared

I really am. Thanks for the post though, it really does help. Both advice wise, and mentally.

I highly doubt they'd go after you for a single album unless you're a high profile distributor. What did you upload that had you so worried about retribution anyway, Metallica?

The Avalanches.

You should've used a burner e-mail.

I did.
