Peter Brotzman

Sun Ra

The list goes on.
>not including Coltrane
Are you a superpleb?
It's not good, dude. Seriously. Listen to Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch. That album is a few steps back from free jazz, and it's out as fuck. If you actually listen to and like that shit, then go for free jazz. But what the fuck man. Jerk off to some Jackson Pollack while ur at it. I'll be listening to music that requires a wee bit more thought behind it.
Not yet mentioned:
>Cecil Taylor
>Albert Ayler
>Ornette Coleman
Coltrane is too entry level. I prefer truly boundary pushing artists.

You're either listening to shit free jazz or not listening closely enough to good free jazz if you think it can't be just as nuanced, emotional and musically interesting as regular jazz.
If you don't find it palatable, that's completely understandable but to say it doesn't require thought to play is undervaluing the time people like Coltrane and Dave Holland spent striving to make exceptional free music.
someone really needs to make a chart
Shut up Ian
Coltrane's free jazz isn't really that exceptional imo
Kaoru Abe
Derek Bailey
Evan Parker
Han Bennink
Spontaneous Music Orchestra
Globe Unity Orchestra
Lol coxhill
Certain Anthony Braxton recordings
etc..
Truly a pleb opinion
Could you elaborate on why you think it's not exceptional?
...
thanks senpai
Boy jazz discussion on Sup Forums has really gone downhill.
1. It's Pollock.
2. As far as understanding music and visual art is concerned, you seem to be stuck in 1910.
what sparkled my interest was this enchanting live session:

Why would you come into this thread expecting good discussion?
Those of us who like jazz have a weekly thread that we stick to.
Most of us get our fix in /blindfold/ these days.
/jazz/ is still alright but if you have a thread seeking to discuss only free jazz, you're bound to get a bunch of rymers and avant-teens who's idea of a good discussion is recommending some obscure Japanese sax player who would probably struggle to play a 12 bar blues.
hehehehe. It is a good joke you made, friend.
