Hey Sup Forums, I know almost nothing about country music. Is there any country worth listening to? The only "good" country I've heard so far was Tones Van Zandt, and I only know of him because Conor Oberst cited him as an influence.

tl;dr: Good country thread.

John Prine s/t is fantastic, you should definitely check it out if you like Van Zandt.

Depends on what you mean by 'country.'
I've been digging the Sumner Brothers lately.
Conveniently, here's a TVZ cover.

Townes Van Zandt was such a great artist. Too bad the production on his studio albums always takes away the edge from his music? That's my experience.

His live recordings are phenomenal. Heartbreaking stuff. There's this violin bit in some live rendition of Waiting Around To Die that's just pitch perfect scream of pain.

Another AOTY contender.

I don't know if this is exactly country, but among TVZ I really like the White Buffalo too (though that's going to *Americana* territory IIRC).

He did amazing cover of The Highway Man

Most country related artists seem to be better in live.

I hate it when people ask "is there country worth listening to?"

Mostly because pre-1965, about a third of all popular music was country and country related genres, and these days almost everything takes influence from country music a la country rock, "folk" or rock n roll.

But if you want a couple of good country bands, Wayne Hancock and the Devil Makes Three.

Then figure it out from there. Country is one of the easiest genres to into.

The last song on this album destroyed me.
Listen to the whole album if you want but honestly you only need this song and maybe the title track. I'm probably being too harsh but I really wish the whole album was like the last 2 songs.
