De meest gebruikte woorden in het Engels zijn van Germaanse oorsprong. Dat jullie veel Romaanse woorden overgenomen hebben maakt jullie niet opeens niet-Germaans.
Voor de ebische miems wil ik jullie wel Kelten noemen,
This 2bh. I understand barely any German but when I read German sentences I can often guess correctly what a lot of the words mean, and sometimes I can pick up the general meaning of the sentence if it is simple enough. But I can't understand any French whatsoever, except for recognising a few words every so often, despite French-derived words making up a larger percentage of the English language than Germanic-derived words.

Best way to learn?
I intend to move to Switzerland next fall so I really should get started.
>mien anekdotes
jongen
een hoop franse woorden die ken je wel
het leeuwendeel van de engelse zelfstandige naamwoorden komt uit het franse
de "closed word classes" en dus de meest gebruikte woorden, de botten zeg maarzijn ja germaans, maar het spek van het engels, de zelfstandige naamwoorden, de bijvoegelijke voornaamwoorden zijn dat niet
o en je zit te jokken dat je duits kunt gokken
dat kun je niet
>Best way to learn?
go live in germany
otherwise duolingo
keep in mind that swiss german is quite different from hochdeutsch.
What's up my fellow German bros. I'm trying to get in touch with my Scandinavian heritage
Fuck of mate, I'm afraid my anecdotes in this case are accurate. Explain to me how I can go to a /deutsch/ thread and correctly guess the general meaning of a fair few posts (no, this doesn't mean I think I can speak/understand German), while when I go to a /fr/ thread, every single sentence is meaningless gibberish bar a few out of context words? The reason is because English is grammatically Germanic, and on top of that, a large portion of English words are derived from Germanic words. Yes, a lot of English words are derived from French as well (~29% compared to ~26% Germanic), but grammar is much more important.
>Explain to me how I can go to a /deutsch/ thread and correctly guess the general meaning of a fair few posts (no, this doesn't mean I think I can speak/understand German), while when I go to a /fr/ thread, every single sentence is meaningless gibberish bar a few out of context words?
>jokkenbrokwezen
What does this mean, just out of interest?
Yeah, English is sheerly a Germanish speech.
Cleanse the wordbook of its filthy Latin oversway and make Ænglish great again!
i figured you could guess :^)
liar-being
What are you?
>i figured you could guess :^)
I know you're probably joking but in any case I didn't mean to come across as a know-it-all, and sorry if I did.
Also no I'm not a liar, I have no reason to lie on an anonymous imageboard. I'll accept there may be an element of confirmation bias, but I am not a liar.

Initially, I thought this sounded Slav-tier, but the more I listen to it, it starts to sound vaguely like (thick) Northern English or Scottish.
A white European-american
a big part of why you think that is because you've been told it's really close to english
if i were to show you this clip and told you before hand "look at this wacky czech dialect" , you would nod and agree if i said "sounds kind of like polish, doesn't it?"
Frisian is indeed close to English, but they have also been seperate for many centuries, with little to no exchange between them.
there is just a lot of confirmation bias going in with things like this.
Yeah, or maybe it's the fact that the cadence and sounds resemble those of dialects in northern Britain.
probably a bit of both
i don't particulary hear what you hear, they don't really sound that similar at all, but i can kind of understand if you think they sound alike.
Wat doen al deze eewige engelsmannen in deze draad

It's an archaic English term for "eternal" that shares the same root as "eeuwig"
en.m.wiktionary.org
"Eternal Anglo"
"Eche Englishman"
It's too funny to see bunch of Celts raped by the French act like they have anything to do with the Vikings.
Frankland is Germanic.
Didn't know that, thanks. Although I did know that eewige = eternal, but only because of Der Ewige Jude :^)
