Why, that is an interesting observation my Netherlandic friend. You make a commendable point, but I would just like to point out that what you refer to as "British English" is not a reserve of little old England. It is oftentimes known as "Commonwealth English", or Canadian, Australian, South African, et cetera English, and each are slightly different from one another.
American English spelling was developed in the United States of America to intentionally differentiate itself from Britain and the British Empire. Much of the rest of the English speaking world did not go through that process, and used English as it had always been written.
Furthermore, the United States has only been a superpower and an global cultural force since WII, well after the founding of most nations. Before that time, American English spelling was seldom used beyond the USA. That is why internationally Commonwealth English spelling is very common alongside American English spelling.
In Canada, both are technically correct, but Commonwealth English is preferred and used in the government and education.
what kind of english do you want me to use? we learn british english here, ye cunt
British English > US English
I'd actually prefer Aussie English, but it's just not usable in a professional setting, which is about the only time I use English.

British English is for gentlemen, American English is for plebeians.
oi thas rite mate, aam a fo'en gentleman!
That's quite the argument you got there, lad.
British English is the standard in schools pretty much everywhere.
