is this proto shoegaze?
Is this proto shoegaze?
is this proto shoegaze?
No. It's dream pop / new wave. The guitars draw from jangle pop and do not possess the fuzzy qualities that define shoegaze.
Yes, it's pretty much universally acknowledged that dream pop and certain, more ethereal, gothic rock bands were shoegaze's prime influences.
This is proto shoegaze
yes

I remember when Nicholas Jaar invented Proto-music in 300 B.C. by using atonal rock clacking and water ambiance. Oh what a joyous day that twas, sitting on the river watching Nicholas begin to explore what we now call "music". It wasn't until 100 A.D. (Around the Time of Michael Gira's birth) that Artists such as Lil Dickey, Donovan, Bob Dylan, Magma, Cardiacs, Steve Reich and Mitski began writing orchestral pieces that consisted of over 1,000 rock clanking players and 20 Water effect specialists, then modern pop music was born. Long live the fat negro farm girls who kept me from truly loving myself enough. Fucking ratchet poptimist hicks
I believe this is the closest predecessor to the "ethereal" thing.

The fact it predicts shoegaze is eclipsed entirely by the fact it's 100% the first chillwave song.
"Chillwave" isn't a real genre, this tag was invented by stupid p4k hipster cucks.

Stop citing this.
Just because it's a wall of sound approach to pop, doesn't make it shoegaze. It's Spector-style pop, one of the hallmarks of the Beach Boys.
It's nowhere close to the heavily distorted sound of what shoegaze is, and using it as an example is just regurgitating a Pitchfork article.
The Ostrich marks the beginning of many genres, including shoegaze, in 1964.
Well, yeah, Cocteau Twins is the quintessential dream pop band
I don't think so.
