>Christian Petzold (1677 – before 2 June 1733) was a German composer and organist. He was active primarily in Dresden, and achieved a high reputation during his lifetime, but his surviving works are few. It was established in the 1970s that the famous Minuet in G major, previously attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, was in fact the work of Petzold. The sprightly melody was used in the 1960s pop music hit "A Lover's Concerto," by the American group The Toys. [1][2][3] Symphonie fantastique

that seems to be a pretty common Sup Forums thing. Talking more about the people making the music than the music.
Jaxon Nelson
that seems to be a pretty common world thing it's easier to talk about people than something like music, no matter how much theory you know
John Taylor
yeah simpletons tend to need a "human" aspect of a story in order to really grasp it. Its really very easy to discuss music without the biographical element. the composers life is more of an interesting footnote to the music itself.
do you guys have any sort of guide to "getting" classical music? or is the best way just to keep listening until you have a general understanding of it?
its just that it's such an overwhelming thing to get into, and i also haven't listened to too much outside of modern classical
Henry Cooper
Evolving an attention span helps. Take up meditation if you're too easily distracted.
Liam Wright
You can just listen to it like you do normal music y'know. I mean I guess if you want a deeper understanding you could read some books or skim Wikipedia and learn some basic music terms.
Blake Turner
Read about the theory and structure on Wikipedia. Read about the piece itself on Wikipedia, Classical Notes or booklets (if you bought a CD or downloaded it in a torrent). Watch youtube videos (I recently watched Schiff talking about Bach's solo suites, for example). If you don't get a piece after several listens, listen to different interpretations. Bach can be difficult to get into, no need to rush to his music just because he's well-known.
But listening is certainly more important when it comes to learning how to enjoy. Theory is a sort of a map, you can find a bar on a map but you won't drink a beer with your friends and gave fun on the map.
How old are you? I started weed when I was underage, it looks weird to see an adult doing weed for the first time.
Also, at the beginning you'll probably fuck it up, won't feel anything, burn your throat and just cough out all the smoke.
Eli Carter
i got the attention span down for the most part
that's what ive been doing for the different interpretations thing, i checked out a different interpretation of le sacre du printemps and i enjoyed it more than the leonard bernstein everyone seems to love. i'll read some stuff on wikipedia and see what happens
nice, gonna read that
Nathan Turner
There's not much helping you when it comes to different interpretations. That one is really just a matter of what you like. If you want some book recs Rosen, like said is great. Other than the Classical Style I'd also rec the Romantic Generation and Freedom and the Arts. Grove is also nice but Rosen's criticism in Freedom and the Arts should be kept in mind.
Samuel Davis
31 I don't smoke or drink because I don't like it and also I'm a pussy. Want to see if drugs can enhance appreciation of music and fine arts in general. I'll start with weed because I read it's not as harmful as all the other drugs.
Lucas Diaz
Yes weed will most likely produce that effect on you. You see, when you smoke weed THC will go into your brain and act as serotonin substitute. Serotonin is the chemical your brain produces responsible for pleasures feelings, happiness. So when you're brain is running wild on fake serotonin, everything looks lovely. When people are high on weed, they're not really hungry, it's just that food tastes better i.e. Regarding to music what will happen is the following: Shitty music becomes acceptable, good music becomes amazing music and amazing music becomes like reaching nirvana. I love listening to classical music while high on weed.
Connor Moore
>weed will suddenly make Schoenberg and Memehausen acceptable can't wait desu
Hudson Phillips
Further proof that Schoenberg is underrated.
Michael Powell
>because I don't like it How can you say you don't like weed if you've never tried it?
Caleb Brown
I was talking about cigarettes. Weed seems like a useful, fun and harmless drug. Tobacco is just a meme addiction.
Blake Morgan
Best composer who doubled as murderer Gesualdo or Salieri?
Maybe in a bad part of the city. The only things to watch out for in this part of Seattle are the street stoners who will probably want to smoke a bowl with you. And hobos.
