He's really not that great of a guitarist, he just has an incredible ear for melodies and progressions.
...
Yeah I guess in his case I'm speaking from a songwriting perspective.
...
plebs will deny this

gud picks
Johnny Marr
Boy, Fahey's got a doughey face. I never noticed it before.
I was really interested in his music when I was 14. I was amazed by his technique, but I got tired of it over time. I'm more into jazz and jazz fusion nowadays. He's definitely mastered his technique, but I'm no longer impressed by that. He didn't do anything original or groundbreaking with it. I'm more interested in Allan Holdsworth, Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery. They've transcended the instrument and made something never heard of before.

I've been a fan of all the virtuosos, used to be into all kinds of shredders. These days I just can't really get into really complicated guitar music. My favourite guitarists atm are Mark Kozelek, Jason Isbell and Isaac Brock.
>"he's not that great of a guitarist, he just is a really great guitarist"

> inb4 avalanche of fags that only have listened to Purple Haze saying he is an 'average' player
could do a pretty good Bob Dylan impersonation too

this desu
what does that mean
...
he fully admitted that he only played guitar in a certain way with a certain goal but he was extremely good at what he set out to do and is by far one of the most unique guitarists ever
I know exactly what you're talking about. Check this out:

Chris Poland, there you go
>nah Dave I didn't sell your amps for drugs
Only even remotely correct picks in this thread
thanks for sharing yuor story
>that patchy chinese mustache
yeah... that was a sad way to be ejected
Agreed, but imagine if they kept Chris and still brought in Marty?
Accept it, nobody can play an emotive, melodic solo based on not much more than a minor pentatonic better than Gilmour. At what he does, he's the best. Being a godly player isn't just about mad skillz, speaking as one whose absolute favourite guitar player is Fripp
Just as I thought I would have an actual discussion about music on this board... Sigh...
yeah man, they're both godly, but in different ways
...
white boy playing bluesy e-minor
yawn
my nigger
>white boy
also, there's not a single blues or rock musician with solos as instantly recognizable and memorable as Gilmour's
dimebag
more people recognize and remember kurt cobain's guitar solos and you know it.
ppl who post in these threads probably hate dirty projectors but hes insane
In all honestly, likely the most technically proficient player alive.
bullshit
maybe teen spirit and he's only repeating the melody
he's an 8/10 at jazz and a 6/10 at metal
They're crazy good
dude is truly the goat
Mark Knopfler is the GOAT and I met him once in a pub and he's a really cool guy. Seriously down to earth.
...
Love al this ones desu, even Gilmour but not so much as all this fellas.
...
All fantastic picks
Cosey
I got to see Sir Richard Bishop last year for free inside a large rotunda. Amazing player.
lel I was waiting for this or Kid Cudi desu
For some reason I feel like this was posted by someone who actually does enjoy Hendrix and is just shitposting due to immense boredom and a directionless life.
say what you want, but he's the best at what he does
also the solo on we're an american band is maybe the best guitar solo in the history of rock music
Yours too. Allan Holdsworth may not be from this planet.
its hard to fine a good picture of Carson McWhirter
But Carson McWhirter
gordo
He's ok, but their music is way too bland
tu eres gordo
>can't tell a difference between songwriting skills and technique
stay golden, reddit
...
Very true
>can't into reading comprehension enough to understand that we were implying that good guitarists don't necessarily need to have good technique
who's actually from reddit?
also if you're honestly that anal about technique just start posting classical guitarists with flawless technique: youtube.com

i used to think that too. than i realized i was lying to myself.
...
i mean lloyd's technically better (see his solo on marquee moon vs verlaine's), but it's pretty standard pentatonic/major stuff since he came from more of a rock background, and verlaine's was a bit more unique. use of modes, weird rhythms, jazz-influenced stuff
idk it's just two different styles, at least post why you think lloyd is better
>i mean lloyd's technically better
you said it yourself. verlaine certainly deserves all the credit for coming up with the Television sound but Lloyd's playing is way more emotive and tighter. same with Reed vs Morrison.
>you said it yourself
yeah i said he was technically better. like in terms of the cleanness of his playing, the tightness of his playing, and all that, but i disagree that's it's more emotive
Goddammit I love Doug
his solos just lack definition in comparison to Lloyd's, the one in Marquee Moon, for example, sounds unintentionally sloppy.
i felt that way for a while too but i think it's intentionally sloppy and it sounds pretty good once you get used to the style. plus the gradual buildup at the end of the solo is GOAT
that said, lloyd's elevation solo is tight and amazing
the best guitarists aren't the ones shitting out notes per second faster than the speed of light, there the ones doing really creative and technical shit, dirty projectors is definitely on that list.
have you seen them live? theyre fucking insane
a great songwriter can be a great guitarist despite poor technical skill
a technical player with no songwriting skill is a bad guitarist
literal autism
so in your opinion Hendrix is a bad guitarist?
How would you take that from my post
My guys. Also Daniel Bachman.
>Ribot didn't write any of Tom Waits' songs
officially a shit guitarist, i guess
We're finished here, pack up everyone.
his songs are as bland and rudimentary as those of any millennial garage band
Nice
This was my first thought as well, he's really badass
I love especially the early Dire Straits songs' guitar parts, like In the Gallery
...
Genuinely though, dude has some of the greatest solos ever.
...
Love what this man does with a guitar.
