Ed apologists say he contributes in the studio, even though that's not really true, and that he's responsible for the band's "dreamscapes" and "etherality", which is just cringeworthy shite. The band hadn't sacked him yet cos he's a mate, they're all betas and he in fact is the most attractive of them all, so it doesn't hurt having a presentable face and a normie link in the band
