What does "emo" even mean? The general says its pop punk scene kids and Sup Forums says its 90s sad folk rock with annoying vocalists.

emo means great music

Basically either sad punk or sad indie.

Lots of emo bands have acoustic songs but all acoustic projects generally aren't considered emo

also lmao folk rock

mom

>folk rock

>folk rock

It's neither. It was an '80s movement in the DC hardcore punk scene wherein bands started adding some catchy melodies and introspective (as opposed to political) lyrics.

This

>folk rock

>folk rock
you should probably fucking kill yourself

>Folk Rock

hey!

anyone have those charts of the best "emo albums"

I don't know why everyone's triggered about the folk rock thing.

There's generally some crossover between emo and sadcore, which has crossover with slowcore, which is pretty heavily influenced by folk rock.

These niggers got triggered by b8

"Emo" has been a musical buzzword for the last three decades

What it used to mean is a sub-genre of post-hardcore in the early 90s that fused hardcore punk with emotive lyricism and delivery
It fused with indie rock in the mid 90s and later into the late 90s and early 2000s with pop punk and pop rock
Around 2009 many contemporary emo bands rebelled against the common perceived idea of emo in popular culture and chose to instead draw influence from the emo and indie rock hybrids of the mid 90s, this is what's known as the "emo revival"

What emo means to the average pleb and popular culture at large is just any and all angsty music primarily targeted towards teenagers
