they don't make kanji phrases like that but as a modifier or noun by itself
just think of different french words in english, you don't speak french when you speak english, only words and few at a time

Don't worry.
You learn them faster as you may think at the beginning. There will be the same radicals over and over again and later even the same characters. If you study daily, you can easily manage 100-120 characters a week. After around 1000 you will have passed the elementary stage. Over 2000-2300 would be Master's tier and over 9000 God tier. I know a lot of people who didn't even bother to learn Kanjis but master japanese.
