Is there a more overrated band?
Is there a more overrated band?
Either Queen or The Beatles
animal collective
Well, maybe back on 78 when people actually knew them. But to answer your question, Genesis maybe?
U2
How they were considered post-punk is beyond me
Many.
ACDC
they are overrated, but there are a crapload of more overrated bands.
they're actually underrated these days imo. a lot of people discount the influence they (specifically ace frehley) had on a lot of young musicians
lots
the smiths was the first to pop into my head
Neutral Milk Hotel
Yes. Virtually anyone you ask will dislike KISS or say "Oh i like that one song!"
This is why they are overrated
They are well known but are shit to the maximum level of shittiness
Joy Division. You could also throw in every single post-punk band ever to exist, but mostly Joy Division.
Most people recognize that KISS is just a shitty gimmick band. I don't know anyone who thinks of them as great musicians. Now a truly overrated band is Led Zeppelin
Queen is still more overrated
No one thinks of Kiss as anything more than a quintessential dadrock band liked exclusively by 50 year old men, and that had some ok singles, while there are many, admittedly young, people who genuinely think Queen is the epitome of music and that Bohemian Rhapsody is the best song ever written
>Led Zeppelin
You shut your nigger mouth.
I don't know, man. Freddie Mercury is one of the best singer of all time, and Brian May was one of the best guitarists.
At least Queen had a couple good songs.
The Beatles is definitely the most overrated one.
Bon Scott era ACDC is GOAT.
Brian Johnson/Back in Black era ACDC is definitely overrated though
Grateful Dead
...
Fair.
I never remember Kiss being overrated. If anything, music critics have always loathed these guys.
Overrated=Bruce Springsteen and U2
Fuck you Bruce Springsteen kicks ass
kiss isn't overrated regarding music critics, theyre overrated regarding the average 80s hard rock fan
also
>implying bruce springsteen isnt god tier
>Overrated=Bruce Springsteen
Ignorance is the only excuse for this
Listen to War, Achtung baby, and unforgettable fire.
Get back to me when he can actually sing and play a guitar and doesn't need the best backing musicians in the world to make him sound passably good.
Shit thread so far.
Old band you don't like =/= overrated. The Beatles, Zep, Queen, U2, Springsteen? Not fucking overrated at all. All but the Beatles arguably get more praise than they deserve (the Beatles deserve every positive word they get), but they're all good bands. Acting like Queen or Zep weren't a huge deal, wildly talented, and immensely successful just because normies like them is fucking retarded.
Here are some real overrateds:
>AC/DC
>Kiss
>Aerosmith
>Guns n Roses
>All of hair metal
Bands that are wholly unimpressive on a technical level, had virtually no valuable impact on the musical landscape, have aged like spoiled milk, and yet are somehow revered as being among the greats. These bands are what we call dad rock.
This.
GN'R don't deserve to be in that list, they were genuinely good
Literally one talented member and one good album.
uh no. they actually have great music
Don't most critics still despise them though? There are tons and tons of middle aged men who love them because they grew up on them in the 70s but it seems like they're a total joke amongst people who didn't grow up on them.
How did KISS get into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?
Aerosmith and AC/DC are on par with KISS
no
Pink Floyd
i'm not sure if anyone with a valuable opinion really rates kiss
KISS are perfectly rated. They were actually pretty good musicians despite what anybody tells you, Paul Stanley was a fucking god-tier frontman who would do high jumps in kicks in stilettos, Ace Frehley could deliver countless riffs that get stuck in your head, and their stage show couldn't be topped. They're a band that didn't try to record the very best albums, they were showmen. In their prime, they completely succeeded at everything they tried to do. Perfectly rated band.
>detroit rock city
>love gun
>I was made for loving you
>beth
>black diamond
yeah they're fine by me.
GET UP
GET DOWN
Do yourself a favor and seek "Overrated" on a Dictionary. Then come back
This.
Popular doesnt always equals to garbage
You're right. Immortal is pretty great, but falls off after the first two albums.
My Dad is a Rock Star?
More like "My Son is an Ungrateful Piece of Shit".
Why would you think the american hall of fame has any sort of relevance, or knowledge of (duh) rock music. Madonna is on it, for fucks sake
Sup redsite
>How they were considered post-punk is beyond me
by releasing several post-punk albums throughout the 80s
early U2 fell in perfectly with bands like the chameleons, echo & the bunnymen, the cure etc.
They made great riffs, knowingly stupid but hilarious songs, and had fun personalities. KISS has always been a bit misunderstood by people in that "higher than average, but lower than genius" IQ bracket.
>Leaving out Boy and October
????
They were one of the most important bands of their kind. They were hugely innovative showmen. They knew how to sell tickets.
This is the correct answer
Actually, no.
Fuck no. Listen to Animals, front to back, and sit the fuck down.
AC/DC
Queen
Iron Maiden
Taylor Swift
Grimes
What the club kiddys are listening to
Guns N' Roses
>nearly universally considered a pathetic joke
>overrated
>knowingly stupid but hilarious songs,
I agree with everything you said, but this point right here tends to go ever people's heads. Leave it up to Kiss to record a song of Gene complaining about his woman cheating on him, followed up by him bragging about how the women are lining up to ride his cock (tracks 2 and 3 on Dressed To Kill). I'm sure they knew exactly what they were doing.
Nope
>Queen
I agree with this and would like to add:
>Journey
Nope.
A bit overhyped by Deadheads (and admittedly me) but outside of that group nobody gives a shit about 'em.
This. They totally knew. Especially when you consider that Gene is actually VERY smart, and a savvy businessman.
Queen
AC/DC
Nirvana
Any rock group that had only one or two notable song and yet are still considered classics for some reason.
>Journey
>Whitesnake
>Kansas
>Styx
>Scorpions
The list can go on.
Overrated by who? Music critics have crapped on those bands for decades.
Most of those bands had a pile of hits, there's just one song of theirs that's widely played anymore. By that logic, Stevie Wonder is overrated because 90% of people nowadays only know Superstition.
Kiss's first three albums were cool hard rock records, but from Destroyer onwards they turned into overly slick stadium rock. Love Gun isn't anywhere near as good as Dressed to Kill.
Not at all. They were a big influence on 80s rock and also the entire costumecore metal scene pretty much descends from them.
Axl has tons of talent as a songwriter and a vocalist, sadly he wasted it because of his huge ego.
Radiohead
Kiss had their heyday during that mid-70s period when the hippie era bands were fading out but punk hadn't happened yet; this was a boomtime for hard rock (Kiss, Aerosmith, BTO, Montrose, Rick Derringer, etc).
AC/DC sure, but Aerosmith wipe the floor with them as songwriters.
>implying either AC/DC or Kiss could possibly have come up with a Dream On or Janie's Got A Gun
Hair metal... Oh boy, where do I even begin... Poison, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, Warrant, Extreme.
>forgetting Ratt, Cinderella, Skid Row, Tuff, Pretty Boy Floyd, Tesla, UFO...
This
The Eagles
I instantly discard any GOAT album list if they include Hotel California somewhere in the top 1000
Only americans like Kiss anyway
Queen's relevancy in music history is merely symbolic. People like symbols such as Freddie Mercury. Their songs are nothing out of the world, Bohemian Rhapsody couldn't even match some of other contemporary compositions.
I could name you dozens of better dadrock guitarists than Brian May. And just because he had an ultra high pitched voice that doesn't mean Freddie's singing was any special. I can't stand those annoying screams.
was going to post this
>Now a truly overrated band is Led Zeppelin
FUCK YOU FUCK FUCK FUCK FAGGOT
I have to agree with this. Led Zep are great but there are countless other Hard Rockers that did what they did as well as they did and some who did it better.
The Who > Led Zeppelin
>Freddie Mercury
>Annoying screams
You're baiting, right?
Syd's era is overrated as fuck, other than that they're still one of the best bands ever.
>Old band you don't like =/= overrated
>All but the Beatles arguably get more praise than they deserve
Nice reading comprehension bud
What does overrated mean if not 'getting more praise than they deserve'
Overrated doesn't mean bad, it means overrated
ITT: Dadrock discussion
>Bruce
I will seriously fight u lil bitch
stone roses, oasis and the smiths
Even the 14-year-old-edgy-metal-phase me thought they were overrated
>Bruce
>can't sing and play guitar
Nigga what, he has one of the best set of gravelly baritones chest pipes ever. He doesn't shred but he absolutely can play guitar and composes all of the guitar parts, as well as plays a bunch of the solos in his live show.
You could have said the E Street Band is underrated, which is fair and I'd agree. Bruce is objectively a top 10 American songwriter, not many artists can claim an album string as good as Greetings through Born in The USA.
While I agree that Bruce gets tiring at times, most of his work is simply great and he's definitely one of the 10 best songwriters ever. I've seen him live twice and both concerts were amazing, would love a third time.
I do believe Born in the USA, River and part of Rising get too much praise because of "muh patriotism"
Well, you're right about them being innovative showmen but their music was bland and blindly followed trends.
...
There's a lot of Bruce post-Tunnel of Love that I can't stand. The Rising has some great tracks but I skip over a bunch of the others and it's way overly patriotic to the point of cringe in some places. Feels way too dated as a 9/11 album.
I wouldn't call Born in the U.S.A. patriotic. The title track has just been ironically misappropriated as a Merica song over the years, and much of the rest of the album is about the blue-collar man and depressing small town lives.
When you say "most overrated" you should be thinking of shit bands that inexplicably get a ton of praise, let alone praise at all. Not good bands who people give a little too much credit to.
More examples: Foo Fighters, RHCP.
AC/DC.
>Make the same album an entire career
Fuck you. UFO has never been relevant enough to be considered overrated. Not even underrated seeing as no one knows them
Queen/Metallica/The Beatles
I didn't mention UFO.
