Starting with one of the best in metal/prog. The great Sean Malone.

based tony blesses this post
I've liked everything I've heard him play on random YouTube videos and the like, but he's always been one of those guys, to me, that are more famous for being a session guy than any particular project or band. Like Lee Sklar or Pino.
What are Tony's best projects?
are you baiting?
80s Crimson
Flea is a pretty rad bassist, original poster. He has many good funks. Bew bum boo bu boo!
Joe Lester of Intronaut. Lesser known, but an amazing player.
nah. I knew he was in LTE but that's it. lol
Why does Les never play the Tommy the Cat solo live?
Also, good lord has he become a hack.
everybody in intronaut shreds
so did Zappa in the late 70s/80s
tfw les will never redeem himself by dropping some bad-ass synclavier bleeps
go back to /r/bass
literally anybody can play bass guitar
kek
any body can play simplistic ass bass, hardly anybody is actually good though
anybody can play, sure.
It takes time to master any instrument though
Actual GOAT coming through.
Bombs.
>hippie fashion
>hippie politics
what were they thinking?
You guys are forgetting the true master of rock bass.
...
Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller are my favorites
>i'm a fag

wetton>levin

Who do you enjoy if I don't mind me asking?
Tony Maimone
>Every good prog bassist either used a Rick or a Fender Jazz/Precision
Makes it easy to know what kind of bass to save up for.
...
Nick Lowe
John Paul Jones
Bootsy Collins
Flea too, though.
Definitely. Cool guy too
Victor Wooten

you should all be ashamed of your pathetic rockist taste
Mike Watt, of Minutemen, fIREHOSE, dos, and at least a dozen other bands
I'd add:
>Jamaladeen Tacuma (harmolodic jazz-funk)
>Bernard Edwards (Chic)
>Larry Graham (Sly & The Family Stone, Graham Central Station)
>James Jamerson (Motown)
>Jimmy Blanton (Duke Ellington's band)
and at least a dozen other worthy people I can't think of right now
and along with Bootsy, I need to add all the rest of James Brown's great bassists:
>Bernard Odum ('59-68)
>Charles Sherrell ('68-'69)
>Fred Thomas ('71-'73)
is geddy lee 2pleb4u all?
Sup Forums is no longer what it was - so thank you for keeping what's good about it going :)
Vern Rumsey, the list goes on...
The problem with all these threads is that people equate shredding to be the best. With that logic, the best classical music would be the one that started and finished the fastest, or a dance that lasts less than three steps.
The point isn't the mechanics. It's the process. Who gives a fuck how fast you can play, slap or shred? Make a worthwhile contribution to the world, or join the GRP All-Stars and jerk off all over yourselves for nine hours...like at open mic night!
Honestly, some of the best bassists are found in reggae. NOT because "dude they shred so hard", but because they have an insane sense of rhythm, which is at the heart of bass. "But I can't get my licks in"...well then you're actually inferior, son. Because you want to show off instead of playing in. Again, GRP All-Stars is waiting for the next 7-string slapper to say "hey look what I can do!"...Also, listen to The Meters, and how they compliment each other without being snobby shred pricks about it.
...
If we put them in with the rock ones, you'd accuse us of putting them in just for jazz cred.
There he is
You make some good points, but its not like there's NO value whatsoever in playing hot licks... If that was true, anyone with musical intuition and a good internal metronome could become as good as the best bassist in the world within 20 minutes of picking up the instrument. The point is to know when its appropriate to step up and lay down some filth, and when to get out of the way. The point about The Meters being very un-egoistic players is well taken, but I've seen George Porter Jr. play live, and he can get bombastic with the best of them. He's just very disciplined as to when to let it hang out.
Maybe not the absolute best. But how's that measured anyway. My vote goes to Mick Karn for his unique style and sound.
How did he become a hack? I am not following his current work.
Dan Briggs of BtBaM
The late, great Cliff Burton.
Rain Pohlak
Certainly the first bassist that comes to my mind is Lemmy

On the topic of underrated bassists, can we give Andy Rourke his dues? He gets overshadowed by Marr and Morrissey, but he was an integral part of The Smiths' sound. The bassline to Barbarism Begins at Home is one of the GOAT.
I was wondering how long it would take for someone to post Mike. By far the best bassist in that scene, and honestly one of the GOAT
Andy is great, I was listening to some of The Smiths on speakers quite loud today and he really shone.
Crime he hasn't been posted yet.
Wait... When did Chet Baker grow a mullet and learn to play bass?
haha no
this faggot pretty much invented overplaying on the bass, he had no idea about subtlety
Mick Karn, Chris Squire and
sting
best bass player coming through
What about the voice of Geddy Lee?
Underrated as fuck
...
I still have some of this guy's stuff on cassette
This man knows.
>Overplaying
Nice bait, made me reply. 2/10
Paul Chambers is one of my favorites and one of the best bassists in music.
>so did Zappa in the late 70s/80s
Kill yourself
>that hand position
absolutely disgusting
finally, someone who understands it all
Surprised he hasn't been posted yet.
youtu.be
Look at him go.
Yeah some people have faster chops but nobody grooves as well as this man
Yes, Rourke is supremely underrated.
Speaking of groove.
Both Sleep and Om are GOAT
and Al is also top qt

This. Without their rythm section The Smiths wouldn't be shit.
