Hey Sup Forums what's the difference between sludge metal, stoner metal, doom metal, etc.? Are they all basically different terms for the same stuff or are there subtle differences?

Its all music that sounds better after you smoke some Weef.

Sludge: raw and messy
Doom: slow and fuzzy
Stoner: fuzzy and raw and messy

>sludge
>not fuzzy

>stoner
>not slow

Doom is derived from traditional heavy metal, think slow riffing. Sludge metal is like a punk influenced sometimes harsh sounding derivative of doom metal. And stoner metal is basically fuzzed out doom metal often with groove.

Sludge metal emphasizes on distortion and dirty tones

Stoner is more energetic and riff based

Doom is characterized by its slow pace feelings of despair

Though the three often cross paths with each other in a lot of bands they're all sub-genre's in their own right.

Baroness isn't fuzzy and Wo Fat isn't slow

Doom is just slow and heavy.
Stoner is heavy and has a groovy psychedelic touch.
Sludge is way more aggressive and noisy.

/thread

Doom is slow heavy metal riffs that make you feel like you're in the presence of the devil and is also an umbrella term. Traditional doom metal, sludge metal, stoner metal, drone metal, etc. all fall under the doom metal umbrella.

Sludge metal is doom metal that incorporates punk elements and is generally rawer, more aggressive, etc.

Stoner metal is doom metal that incorporates elements of psychedelic rock. Generally utilizes more effects used in psychedelic rock like wah, phase, etc. and generally has a bluesier, groovier vibe.

They're also not mutually exclusive and some bands can be both sludge and stoner (Electric Wizard)

Some sludge metal isn't considered doom because it isn't slow enough like some Melivns I believe (not sure tho)

Some stoner metal also isn't considered doom because it's not slow enough (Kyuss for example is mainly considered stoner rock with only some metal traits so it could be considered stoner metal but not doom metal)

Basically if you want to know if something is doom then ask yourself if it's slow riffage and evokes feelings and imagery of the devil

If you want to know if it's sludge then ask if it sounds raw and grimey and punk

If you want to know if it's stoner ask if it has elements of psychedelia

And apply each genre label if it meets those criteria

Why is Tool considered prog instead of stoner?

When does Mastodon stop being sludge and become prog?

Is Baroness sludge even though they do clean vocals now?

>Why is Tool considered prog instead of stoner?
Not riff-based or repetitive enough
>When does Mastodon stop being sludge and become prog?
Transformation was in process during Leviathan and was definitely complete by Blood Mountain.
>Is Baroness sludge even though they do clean vocals now?
Ehh, probably

doom is black sabbath turned up to 11

stoner is doom+heavy psych

sludge is doom+hardcore punk

They're Different In Lyrical Aspects Too

Doom: Despair, Melancholy, Indifference...etc
youtube.com/watch?v=VSSFG_pNPg0
Sludge: Typically more agressive. Hardcore Drugs, Nihilism, Hatred...

Stoner: What the Hell Do You Expect?

Doom always gives me the spook. Someone recommend me another doom album to listen to?

>Sludge
Angrier doom mixed with hardcore punk
>Doom
Spookier heavy psychedelic music
or
Black Sabbath cultists
>Stoner
Less spooky doom

Both sludge and stoner can overlap with doom

Acid King is just about the spookiest doom there is

Sunn O))) is the spookiest drone doom.

Stoner metal has a strong psych rock vibe.

Sludge metal has a strong hardcore influence.

Doom metal has its own dramatic sounds sorta like traditional heavy metal.
These genres are all known to overlap

There ya go.

>Who’s good looking in this music? No one’s going to gigs because someone’s hot in the band!

What did she mean by this?

Some of their new shit is kinda spooky if only they down tuned lower.

When was this said? I saw her at Psycho and that ass was kinda plump desu.

For everyone else what would you place Boris under these guys are fucking everywhere.

Post-progressive dronedoom

Close enough.

Doom is not necesarily slow, a lot of early doom isn't slow at all. Maybe its slow in comparison to thrash, but not slow.
Sludge is usually pretty aggressive and noisey, like garage thrash or something.
Doom has cathartic or apocolyptic themes and is usually very heavy, often slow, but not always.
Stoner is basically Doom but with stoner/psych themes and more influenced by blues

Dope, what Sunn O))) album should I listen to first?

Monoliths & Dimensions.

Stoner/doom recommendations? More stuff like Wo Fat or Red Fang?

In the vein of those particularly: Droids Attack, Stoned Jesus, Weedpecker

These are great, thanks guys.

Los Natas

This is how I always thought of them. Some people use these terms interchangeably, but it becomes obvious after a while. I mean, you'd never confuse Kyuss with Eyehategod, for instance.

> saw her at Psycho and that ass was kinda plump desu.

This statement requires elaboration

>tfw can't find the last two albums by The Machine ANYWHERE

I only have Shadow of the Machine, Solar Corona, and Drie

doom metal is all tuned down and heavy like
BWAAAAAAHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhh
stoner metal tends to have fuzzier tones and groovier melodies
sludge metal is tuned down like doom metal but they can play it fast, but it sounds like their playing is slowed down by all the fuckin sludge stuck to their guitar

sludge is raw, noisy, influenced by/incorporating elements of crust and not necessarily (though it often is) slow all the time. emphasis on hatred, nihilism, depression, etc

doom is slow and fuzzy. thematically it's all over the place.

stoner is basically downtuned biker rock

it's difficult to explain but the differences are clear as day when you hear them

Baroness isn't sludge

What are they?

Foo Fighters with extra beard

Kek

is there a chart for stoner metal/that includes stoner metal?

Can anyone rec me anything similar to this?
m.youtube.com/watch?v=gGpzXaFa2lE
I listened to A lot of essential stoner/doom metal and I liked it but I kinda like the more energetic approach like these guys

not metal but check out Wand and Meatbodies

I need Sleep imitators stat (that aren't Bongripper). Most stoner metal is too fast.

or Bongzilla I forgot I've already got all their shit too.

iirc weedeater has some of the same members as bongzilla, not very much like sleep though

maybe Om? not really as funky.

wo fat definitely isnt fast

Sludge is like a mix of doom and stoner, its really messy though andkind of its own thing.

Doom is basically slowed down death metal

Stoner is heavy rock riffs slowed down with fuzz

Actually I take back the death meal, it is derived from heavy metal but slowed down. Lately lots of bands have death metal influence
