I meditated to this album last night and it was one of the best meditations I have ever had... there really is a strong conveyance of wisdom and spirituality in this music. That is the main reason people don't understand The Contortionist, i think. Read the lyrics. These guys are pursuing a path of spirituality and knowledge, and if you're not pursuing a similar path, it's going to be really difficult to comprehend the message. They're speaking about unspeakable things. If you haven't had a spiritual experience beyond words, it takes a lot of open mindedness to grasp this music.

There probably never will be one true answer since the term heavy metal was not even a term used in late 60s/early70s to describe certain music genre.
It's always retroactively easier to put label on certain things than it was back then.
Tony Iommi never really thought Black Sabbath was Heavy Metal but rather Heavy Rock.

Kyuss, Nebula, Fu Manchu, Hell Camino etc. - Stoner Rock, more "rock" sound, faster compared to Stoner Metal/-Doom.

Sleep, Stoned Jesus etc. - Stoner Metal. Slower than Stoner Rock, neutral, positive/uplifting lyrics

Electric Wizard, Acid King, Bongzilla etc. - Stoner Doom, slower than two of the above, usually much more sinister sound as well lyrical themes.

I dunno, that's the way I see it. Of course there are bands with lots of overlap or I could just be talking out of my ass as well.
