Grimes lyrics have reached a very high level by indie standards on Art Angels. She writes much better lyrics than Michael Gira, Win Butler, Thom Yorke, or almost anyone successful in an indie rock band. Only a few singer-songwriters who perform as solo acts and usually have less musical complexity, have superior or equal lyrics to her. Sufjan Stevens writes better lyrics than all of the above people, including Grimes. But his music and production are not anything close to her level of work.

True.

dude thats Ariel Pink

She has nothing on Van Dyke Parks

True

Marina is a better lyricist than Grimes, and Marina isn't a very good lyricist.

Your post doesn't make any sense.

It doesn't make any sense to you because you don't live in reality. You've spent so much time behind your computer fantasizing about minor celebrities that you've completely lost touch.

Grimes is so in love with Ariel she wants to become him

a lel and a kek, Ariel Pink makes pointless, pretentious, formless, wandering music, but compared to Grimes it's high art, so I'll allow it

see now this is how you beat up on grimes

It doesn't make sense at all. Marina's lyrics are quite cliche. Grimes is way more original. Look at the lyrics of any of her songs. Random examples (snippets):

Ambrosia
>Feeling no emotion
>Step into the ocean
>Now my mind is everywhere
>And drowning is the only thought I have

Belly of the Beat
>I could feel the world today
>Everybody dies in the point they arise and we dance like angels to
>Breaking all you need in the shapes of faiths and knowledge of you

>And you'll never get sad and you'll never get sick
>And you'll never get weak
>In the belly of the beat yeah!

Oblivion
>And now another clue, I would ask
>If you could help me out
>It's hard to understand
>Cause when you're really by yourself
>It's hard to find someone to hold your hand

>And now it's gonna be, tough on me
>But I will wait forever
>I need someone now to look into my eyes and tell me
>Girl you know you gotta watch your health

California
>This, this music makes me cry
>It sounds just like my soul, oh
>Oh I'm not ready to win
>Oh lord cause I don't wanna know what they say
>'Cause I get carried away
>Commodifying all the pain

>but compared to Grimes it's high art
You're joking, right?

>California
>>This, this music makes me cry
>>It sounds just like my soul, oh
wow, really high art there

Yes. She says the most with the least, that's genius.

Another snippet from California (one of her most hated songs, by the way):

>The things they see in me, I cannot see myself
>When you get bored of me, I'll be back on the shelf
>And when the ocean rises up above the ground
>Baby I'll drown in...

How is that better than Thom Yorke? Theres no enigma to it, too straightforward, no place for listener to form their own interpretation, seems like lyrics written for a simple minded person.

They're much better than Thom "yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon" Yorke's lyrics. Mind you, this is considered the weakest song from Art Angels. Look for the lyrics of other songs of her if you have time.

Here are the entire lyrics of her song Skin:

>Soft skin
>You touch me within and so I know I could be human once again
>I know you're faced with something
>That could consume you completely

>Soft skin
>You touch me once again and somehow it stings
>‘Cos I know it is the end
>I hate that you're leaving
>So why don't you talk to me?
>You act like nothing ever happened
>But it meant the world to me

>And you can't and you can't see the wind in the trees
>And you can't and you can't see the wind in the leaves
>And you can't and you can't see the weight in the dark
>And you can't and you can't see the weight in the heart

>Soft skin
>I'll have you be near my heart,
>Until I feel human
>Soft skin
>You were never a lie to begin with
>So now I'm suffering

How Thom could even compare?

Yeah but at least "yesterday I woke up sucking on a lemon" leaves the listener thinking "wtf does that even mean?" It actually causes you to think, why the lyrics are so strange, and what it all could mean. A middle school dropout could understand Grimes simple lyrics. There's no hidden contextual meaning. Which in my opinion translates to less artistic value.

>indie rock

Lol

Grimes has plenty of strange lyrics too. Try do decipher the meaning of her songs from Geidi Primes and Halfaxa as a fun exercise.

So does Bradford Cox and Sunset Rubdown and most indie bands

True. I'm not going to argue that she's the best lyricist ever. I think her best skill is the actual songwriting (melodies and stuff) not the lyrics. Lyrics are personal and subjective, it's hard to measure them against each other.

cherry pick moar

>Once again, packed like frozen food and battery hens
>Think of all the starving millions
>Don't talk politics and don't throw stones
>Your royal highnesses

>Well of course I'd like to sit around and chat
>Well of course I'd like to stay and chew the fat
>Well of course I'd like to sit around and chat
>But someone's listening in.

>Once again, we are hungry for a lynching
>That's a strange mistake to make
>You should turn the other cheek
>Living in a glass house

well that's one of the few genuinely great thom lyrics. it's still fairly forced though.

grimes can counter with the poem known as realiti.

Pretty good, not gonna lie.

coming from someone who likes grimes, she is not a better lyricist than thom yorke.

coming from someone who hates grimes and radiohead, fucking kill yourself

Lol must really suck to be you.
