Sure. I'm not the best person to explain this, but I'll try. Kind of paraphrasing wikipedia, but here we go:
The Knights Templar existed between 1119-1312. They were a powerful Christian military faction, endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church around 1129.
The Templar society in some ways functioned a little bit like a lot of people imagine secret societies today to do. They did a lot of strange, strange shit in secret. At some point, they lost the favor of the Roman Catholic church and were accused of worshipping a previously unknown entity, Baphomet. From what I understand, within the Templar organization, Baphomet was meant to represent the Christian God. Each feature of it symbollically represents some part of God. I'd go into more detail on that but my mind is blanking right now. Anyways: The Church accused them of worshiping Baphomet, not as a symbol/proxy for God, but as an entity unto itself. This was around the time the Templars were already kind of falling apart, and losing the favor of the Church, which was MASSIVELY powerful around that time, was crippling to them. Some of them were killed for blasphemy (worshiping a false god).
