A girl just broadcasted her suicide on Periscope (franceinfo.fr/fil-info/article/info-france-info-essonne-une-jeune-femme-se-jette-sous-un-rer-en-direct-sur-periscope-788885) . Article in French.

Am I the only one to think that the social media are basically fucking us up? I'm 32 and do not have a Facebook account. I had a cell phone at 18 and I started really using emails with my friends when I was 22/23.

I find that the exposure social media creates a super narcissistic generation, with children that are constantly seeking validation from others.

Of course when I was at school there was pressure to fit within a group but the channels/activities we could use were very limited. It was at school, in the play ground, after school and a bit during the week end. Now it feels like everyone is 24/24 connected.

Technology is evolving so much faster than the social norms. Worse, I think that technology is calling for new norms, but our societal norms can't keep up at this rate.

Or maybe I'm already an old fart. What does b/ think?

Video?

As a 21 year old, I agree. My generation is so soft, so fucking uneducated, and lacks even the most basic common sense. Most of us feel entitled for no reason. I hate my generation with a burning passion.

I believe technology has played a gigantic role in this. The internet will be the fall of the human race. Its only a matter of time, friend.

video doesn't exist.
Sup Forums is full of crap

It's not the first time. Remember toaster steve ?

Yeah but it's more complicated. I did a volunteer experience in rural Africa. Before people would pay messengers to deliver messages in other villages. In basically 10 years, an incredible amount of people got access to mobile communications. I witnessed people walking 2 hours to find electricity to charge their phones. There is such a need to communicate and exchange.

How did he go?

Looks legit

Sauce?

True true, 20 here, the self entitled thing is my biggest concern. Mostly first world countries though. The seek for attention and approval is wrecking teenagers and pushing them new boundaries every day

I'm wondering when terrorists will display their attacks on Periscope.

I think that the first world component is still an access to tech/purchasing power issue. In rural environments, validation is as important as it is in first world. It just happens without tech (so far).

wtf is periscope

An app. You can broadcast live videos.

I'm not sure this generation is uneducated.

I don't think we can blame social media. Narcissistic tendencies have to be there from the start. The internet has degenerated into a freakshow of poseurs and attention-seekers.

Given that suicide is the ultimate act of narcissism, I predict that this Periscope broadcast will not be the last. Never mind, at least we know natural selection is still at work.

>tfw 25 and never had a social media profile

because no friends

I'm not saying that social media are to blame. It's just having a tremendous multiplier effect and I would question suicide as being always a mark of narcissism. In her case it seems though, she did a first video in the afternoon, with 1000 followers, teasing people that something "shocking" would happen later.

Then in your case I believe that on the contrary social media could help you to get some friends.

I'm 27 and deleted my facebook a few years ago. I think the shit is lame and narcissistic and I try to practice what I preach. I still have a tons of friends. As a side note, I had the internet as a kid early on, and figured out how to look at crappy porn when I was like 13 in 2002. Think about kids growing up with porn now. Way Different

>everyone is 24/24 connected

Completely agreed. Porn and gore stuff were really hard/impossible to get (especially gore). I'm wondering what's the impact.

>I think the shit is lame and narcissistic
Totally. It's like a competition to see how many "friends" you can get. Even if you've never even met half of them ...

Facebook is just a facade that people present to the outside world. Everybody tries to give the impression they are successful and their life is perfect. Anyone who lives in the real world knows it's all bullshit. I'd rather have no friends than pretend friends.

Article translation :
Wednesday, the Court of Ervy opened an investigation on the circumstances of a young woman's suicide, which happened at Egly, Tuesday evening. She threw herself under a train

According to the investigators, the vicitm is 19yo, and killed herself on a livestream broadcast on the Periscope app, followed by 35 to 40 viewers. The young woman was living alone, at Elgy. Her parents are living in the county

Few hours before the happenings, she started to, somehow, stage the preparing of her act by announcing on the viewers on Periscope that she'll be doing something in livestream. In reality, she was announcing her future suicide to the users of this livestream app. In her videos, she talk about some love problems. In a sequence, censored by now, she kill herself. Some viewers have racognized the Elgy railway station, wher she killed herself, but it was too late.

That's how the French say it. Like a fraction. 24 hours out of 24

I think he was looking for something along the lines of "drowning in information" or "information overload"

It doesn't matter how educated you are, the amount of attention kids give their electronic devices is going to fuck them up one way or another. Yes you can funnel it to positive attention, but let's face facts, most kids are bandwagoning trends and browsing stupid shit (porn, memes, etc.) that do nothing but fuel the fire that is causing them not to be able to keep up.

Negative as fuck. The human brain isn't evolved to the point where one can take in an influx of porn/gore shit and stay sane in the process. I feel as if there is going to be an influx of sociopaths and social engineers in the coming generations. Shit is going to get very artificial very fast... and kind of already is. So fucking easy to fake a persona amongst all this chaos.

And here I thought I couldn't have less respect for the French

[Title] Her cell phone taken for evidence [/Title]

On the station, the suicide was also recorded by the CCTVs (ask for explenations). After tha arrival of the firemen, the police seized the woman's cellular. It's now to the Court of Evry and the gendarmerie (same as police) to do their job. They'll try to know the exact circumstances of this tragedy.

The translation is approximative, ask if a sentence doesn't make sense to you

I remember being in high school in 2000 when I was 14. Cell phones were just starting to gain traction at that point and you had to have one. Wtf for? What does a 14 yr old have to say?
But now? Jesus I cannot imagine the shit teenagers do at school on their phones. Its always goddamn annoying to see women never a phone out of their bloody hands. Its would be more reasonable to just graft it to their fucking arm.

Man when I was at Uni no one had a laptop! In my last year it was starting a bit and all those who had one were just browsing.

>Wtf for? What does a 14 yr old have to say?

"Mom I'm stuck at school because my ride home from practice cancelled, I can't get in to use the phone because the place is locked. Sure great you got me this phone, huh?"

>The human brain isn't evolved to the point where one can take in an influx of porn/gore shit
Sure it is. Our Paleolithic ancestors used to club each other's brains out for the right to be alpha male. Killing and butchering animals was an everyday occurrence.

For modern humans, it just takes a little getting used to. Is anyone here really affected by gore threads on Sup Forums anymore?

Not to mention how VR and AR are going to shake our norms. When I was 15 I was joking about people having a mobile. Then I got one. I'm sure in 5 years I'll have a Magic Leap helmet on my head, regretting the good old days when we were using smartphones.

all generations hate their generation. especially the people who sits on Sup Forums instead of being out partying socialising and realising other people are really not that bad

I was effected by the gore threads.

That is to say, they created me as a person.

>helmet

Try glasses and then contacts a few years later.

I kind of agree with it. My grandma saw the horrors of WWII first hand at 15. Old and dying were not hidden in hospitals... yet there was not a fascination for it (maybe because it was normal).

and the video?

OP is a frog faggot and will not deliver.

Google is already working on connected lens. This company freaks me out. They are a magnet for all the brillant fuckers across the world yet they insist in displaying this corporate image of a playful/childish organisation.

Just wait few hours, everyone will be fapping to it on Sup Forums

Actually a French girl frog delivered this time.

Yes but in which way?

Completely different. There's a difference between getting exposed directly to beating and clubbing fellow animals and just clicking around on the internet, picture after picture. That's like saying since our ancestors were nude all the time I should be able to look at porn 24/7 without mental affection.

Yeah and we created religion, norms, laws etc. We went from spread out groups to urbanised world.

>That's like saying since our ancestors were nude all the time I should be able to look at porn 24/7 without mental affection.

Wrong. Humans have a sex drive. There's no such thing as a gore drive.

You can become desensitised to gore, but you will keep coming back for sex.

Yes but then think of the time/energy lost by constantly watching porn.
