Sup Forums has been this bad since, what, 2009? Sup Forums has been a large, popular website for several years now. If you're under 30, somewhere around 1 in 10 people you know are regular browsers. Sup Forums is the common point of entry for all of them, so this is no surprise.
The difference now is that now the major migration waves have pretty much ended. There are either less children (unlikely), newfags are simply better about lurking, or they all stay on Sup Forums, since newfags routinely get rooted out and have their shit pushed in outside of Sup Forums. Oh, and mods/jannies got better at their jobs after several rounds of applications and protests from Sup Forums, Sup Forums, and others over the years.

only those of us who had a lot of foresight truly knew what it would mean. i think a lot of those people aren't really affected by it that much as well. i been posting regularly since my freshman year in high school a year after you started. it was really a fun time but i think it truly did end about the time the internet began centralizing towards a specific medium of content (web 3.0) and when any idea that had any value would just immediately become popular.
you didn't really have people talking about themselves as "internet people". everyone had a normal life and didn't think in terms like "meme" and things being on social media. most of us had a normal life and then came onto the internet whether often or every once in a while because it was just plain cool
