We have hiragana and kanji. And kanji is derived from the ancient Chinese characters but kanji and current Chinese characters are not the same anymore. Some of them are same but most of them are not same. I cannot read Chinese characters that Chinese people use except some of simple characters such as woman or so.
We made our language very difficult to discourage foreigners to live in Japan.
