Actually OP if you really want to educate yourself and move beyond the alt-rap label which is inherently limited you should try Ready to Die.
I very much understand an aversion to gangster rap because it seems and often is basically retarded, but Ready to Die is transcendent while remaining extremely authentic. It's got the confidence and bravado gangster rap is known for alongside the self-loathing and world weariness that are inherent in the 'nigger' experience.
