First a small article to get to know some of this great boxers:
Backin the day very few coloured fighters were allowed to fight for a title, it was a sacrilege, Henry Amstrong was fortunate to have a very well conected manager, also add to this the mob influence in the sport that was very big.
good thread Mexanon. I love learning about the non-meme days of boxing.

Thanks Americanon (lol), i belive that the mid 30's to the mid 50's was the apex of the sport, the techniques were more advnced back then, you really have to know how to control the range and distance in both offense and defense, also you didnt have todays golves that compared with yesterdays horehir gloves are like pillows.
Also the amateur system really messed up the development of technique in a fighter since you need to mainly throw and land a more punches than the opponent to win.
