Both are short, fairly unbalanced, and only really confer an advantage against heavily armoured opponents.

Poor choice. Swords are really secondary weapons, unless you're talking about Zweihanders/great swords. They also take a lot of skill to use effectively.

It would still be fine one on one - people used polearms in duels all the time. Just look at Hans Talhoffer's manuals - a lot of it concerns the use of polearms in a duel. I'm not sure why you think it would be ineffective.

Wrong. Maces was designed specifically to deal with armour - a blade will be deflected by armour and lose a lot of the power of the blow. A mace will send most of the energy of the blow through the armour - that's the reason they only really took off in the 14th/15th century when full plate harness became widespread.
