Finns are universally recognized as their own genetic, linguistic and cultural group. It is archaic to think that they are Slavs, Scandinavians or some mixture of the two. The indigenous land of the Finns might be something along pic related, until the Slavic migrations displaced Finnish culture from the area that is today known as Northern Russia. Finnish culture was still relatively alive in Russia until displacement and "cultural conversion" programmes backed up by the Russian/Soviet government. Many Russian Slavs still have genetic Finnish heritage though, the big P himself for example.
While Finns did not invent writing for themselves, and were introduced to writing via conquest instead of simple conversion it is clear from other writings that Finns were seen as their own group by others.
