I said the above for a reason. Gun owners where I live own guns solely for hunting. Rifles are usually 22's, 303's or 308's for Deer hunters. Duck hunters will usually use over-under double barrel shotguns. Pheasant hunters are usually our only hunters to use pump actions.
For pigs they use dogs and knives.
Our criminals have guns but rarely use them. The use them on opposition gangs and gangland shootings or to rob stores, pubs, bookies, banks, rarely with a shot fired.
Swat doesn't use the AR platform rifles ordinary citizens buy. They use actual assault weapons. The AR platform rifle is no different from the old Wood stock semiauto rifles our grandpappys used. One pull of the trigger, one bullet comes out. The only difference is that they are made of plastic and designed to look like an assault weapon. It's like getting a plastic body kit of a high end sports car and slapping it on a Chevy S10 frame. It may look like the real deal, but it doesn't perform like it. Other than that, the .223/5.56 isn't even a powerful round, very small bullets. The main reason the military/swat uses them is because the rifles are reliable, customizable, light weight, have a very light recoil, and since the rounds are small you can carry more ammo. However the civilian models are not, and never will be assault rifles.

The entire point was that civilians had the same power as the government.
Look back to the revolutionary war - the government didn't have the cannons or the ships, private holders did.
If we went back to the way things were then, missiles and tanks would be owned and operated by civilians and the military would only be a bunch of guys with rifles.
To maintain the "point" of the amendment, citizens need equal individual force compared to the government, to keep the government in check.
And before you say that's not necessary, read up on the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust, the ethnic cleansing of Ireland, the purges of Stalinist Russia, Mao's Great Leap Forward, Pol Pot, etc.
