It's a manga that's been running for 20+ years now, and it's pretty incredible. One of the things that's most interesting about it, is that the author has basically reinvented himself in his style several times throughout the series, while still keeping it true to its roots. During the first 10 volumes (referred to collectively as the "Golden Age" arc), it's basically gritty 80s style manga of purely dark medieval warfare, becoming borderlined historical fiction. but in volumes 11-12+ literally hell opens up and pours itself onto earth evil dead style but in a completely serious manner. Over the next ~5 volumes you have every bit of bad in his world corrupted and risen to full blown demonic rape-fests; corrupt priests burning everyone at the stake, packs of roving goblins kidnapping women, raping and impregnating them to make more monsters, an evil god-emporer who tries to take over the world etc. It then turns into a traditional swords/sorcery fantasy where Guts assembles a team of rag-tag heroes to destroy the five God Hands of hell, one of whom was his best friend and rival during the Golden Age.

The first anime that aired in 1998 was pretty good, captured the feeling of Berserk pretty well.
The recent movies were pretty bad, so definitely watch them last if you want to at all.
There's an anime coming this summer which could go either way, but might be bad like the movies due to the CGI.

I was gonna say something to do with Casca, but Griffith is pretty good at severing ties with people he was closest to. People that willingly risked their lives day in and day out for him. People that had the utmost faith and confidence in their fearless leader who led them to victory upon victory. People whose lives were extinguished like a candle by infernal beings as their trusted commander ascended into Godhood.
In other words, fuck Griffith.
But man I have no idea how Miura's going to kill him off. Maybe Skull Knight has something up his sleeve? But that'd seem like an asspull. Same thing with the Elf King.

Almost now weakness (honestly haven't seen one so far) Skull Knight's agenda haven't been really clear as well, as well as his extend of power so that might not be a far reach if he got something up his sleeve. The problem is how will Miura descend Griffith from his thrones. It's going to take a very long time.
