sure, it's a bit long, but it's a great record.
One that's not as long is In a Silent Way, which is also great, probably even etter.

Shame.

too long
couldn't finish

In a Silent Way is if you wanna hear the GOAT keyboard album. Jack Johnson is if you want the GOAT guitar album. Bitches Brew is if you wanna hear both but not really either because there's too much of both.

...

most rolling stones albums desu

Listen to this instead.

>Golden Age late 60's / early 70's Rolling Stones era
>album includes 7 minutes blues jam directly in the middle to pad out the run time

That's even worse. Sounds like shitty 80s gay porn video music.

I never could get into jazz

>Sounds like shitty 80s gay porn video music.

You have written the weirdest thing I have ever read on here. Well done.

>Sounds like shitty 80s gay porn video music.

lol whats wrong witchu

headhunters is a G.O.A.T album m8

nah m8 every time I listen to it and hear those jazzy twangs all I can think of is some dude in a bathhouse in grainy 80s video quality taking off his towel and revealing his monster cock and the bottom staring at it with wide eyes and slowly sucking it for a couple minutes then it jump cuts to him getting rammed in the ass

> Jack Johnson is the GOAT guitar album

somebody clearly hasn't heard Bright Size Life by Metheny

Excellent taste.

....There is no way you're not joking.

All post-rock Swans albums. I just don't have the time and mood to listen to the Glowing Man or Soundtracks in one sitting, even if I really love them.

too finish
couldn't long

Why would I be?

It's just a very strange way to describe the album, that's all.

This one, lads.

I mean even at thirty seconds that shitty song is too long.

Not that other user but is this not what you imagine listening to the album? It is called Head Hunters after all and it's pretty sexy music.

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

That's what she said

At least the music on Bitches Brew is good.

I imagine people playing instruments. At least that's what's usually in my head vision-wise when I listen to his funk stuff. Just watching his band play. That would be awesome.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. HH is in my top 5 favourite albums to masturbate to.

ITT: a bunch of plebs who can't finish albums.

That's too bad OP, it's a really fun record.

prime example of an album that separates the poseurs and jazz newfags from those who know their shit. A truly contrived and poor effort that relies far too much on technique and has zero sense of chemistry
this thread hurts my heart. Just split it up if you really can't pay attention for an 1.5-2 hours. Hell my ADHD ass can listen to Bitches Brew front to back and it's my favorite jazz album. It's not even like it's a boring record or anything

Autechre need to learn how to make albums rather than dump all their tracks every couple years.

But I did listen to HH and Bitches Brew...

I don't masturbait to music, my man. That's just distracting.

I agree for the most part but people are a bit unfair to it. It has it's moments, Miss Fortune is pretty smoking most of the way through it and Kamasi could be a very consistent soloist if he didn't take more time than he knows what to do with. I think it shows potential at the very least, though you'd need to change a lot to make it a really good record.

Could you qualify "zero chemistry"? is that in the orchestration? I'm just curious, interested to know why this album fails in respect to other jazz albums. Im Not well versed in jazz by any means, are there other albums that succeed where the epic fails?

ya the potential is certainly there. Kamasi just needs to get his head out of his indulgent ass, and develop an actual group rather than throw together really talented people that haven't played together for long at all
detecting chemistry comes from looking at the scales different parts to the instrumentation use, the polyrhythms or syncopation they employ, when they synchronize melodies or harmonize, etc. You just have to pay close attention, which I like doing anyway for jazz music. The Epic doesn't do a good job because Kamasi just does his own shit for half the album or just soloes as hard as he can, while the backing either do their own thing or try to create a good, well flowing background for kamasi to just come in like the tidal wave over the sand castle like bwah bobodobodoobodobodoobodooobdoodo
>are there other albums that succeed where the epic fails

a solid 3/4ths of Coltrane's discography, you could go check out some Bill Evans(pianist), Duke Ellington has great chemistry, Thelonious Monk's early stuff, there's a lot out there to give you some entry-level recs that are great jazz.

i love this site

I thought the whole point of BB was to be chaotic as shit though- of course things are going to clash

w-what? I was talking about the Epic through all of that. BB is literally my favorite jazz album ever made. And the beauty of BB is that it is so chaotic and unsettling and dissonant, yet manages to be strangely catchy and hypnotic

>every time I listen to it [...] all I can think of is some dude [...] revealing his monster cock

kek

shittt i was reading all of what you wrote thinking you were dissing bb and i'm sitting hear like..
"... i guess i'm a pleb then? oh well"

what are your other favorite jazz albums? i'm trying to dig a bit deeper-miles' jack johnson and on the corner are the only couple else i've heard that i really liked

>kamasi
>relies far too much on technique
>technique

if you're complaining that a jazz record is overly technical this isn't a complain at all. It's just a really stupid thing to say for jazz to be honest
and of course, The Epic isn't not even near to be technical, it's just mediocre rip off.

youtube.com/watch?v=cjuD6lZUU2A

Thats the best part dumbass

Sketches Of Spain and Filles de Kilimanjaro are two I'd say are essential other than the ones that I'm sure have been beaten over your head like Silent Way and Kind Of Blue

some of my favorite jazz albums are

Thelonious Monk- Brilliant Corners
Sun Ra- Lanquidity
Ornette Coleman- The Shape Of Jazz To Come
Bill Evans- Live At The Sunday Village Vanguard
Duke Ellington- Live at Newport
The Modern Jazz Quartet- Pyramid
A Love Supreme
Pharoah Sanders- Karma
Eric Dolphy- Out To Lunch!
Dave Brubeck Quarter- Time Out

I've listened to a ton more but my favorites are a lot of the more entry level things. There's a reason they're widely considered the best though
>relies too much on technique = overly technical

see, you got all mixed up by my language friend. I meant that Kamasi was overly concerned with technique(relied too much on it), and it caused him to give a lack of attention to other key aspects of jazz like atmosphere, chemistry, and sentiment. You don't know music theory if you think that album isn't technical. That doesn't even make sense, that 's like calling Gorguts's Obscura not technical. It objectively is, musically. Being a ripoff(which I agree it is for a lot of the record), doesn't make it not technical

I'll listen to fucking To Be Kind all in one go but Bitches Brew is too much for me. I have to break it up into chunks.

I respect your opinion, but disagree with it. I don't think The Epic lacks neither atmosphere or sentiment. It has its moments for both of these (as far as chemistry goes I'm totally with you, this band was kinda shit).

About technique: what about The Epic do you consider technical so much? I wouldn't call Kamasi's playing techinical by any means. His solos always relies on the same scales (mostly pentatonics) and they don't lead nowhere but a predictable place.
The piano on here is extremely sterile as well. I'd call Thundercat playing way too techinical and lacking clear structures.

But in the end, my main complain about this record is NOT that Kamasi is too concerned with techinque, but rather the solos all of the whole band lack any kind of coherence (as you've said it, it has no chemistry) and the fact that The Epic is unimaginitive and drags inspirations for much better records and musicians.

So, do I dare to say, could you explain better you point?

turns out hot opinion is now a jazz aficionado
lmao

At least he's trying to be a classier individual now Donald is Prime Minister.

too long, couldn't finish

youtube.com/watch?v=eVrYbKBrI7o

I never wasn't, as long as I've been here anyway. Why are you being a hater, stop hating
Technicality is a production of songwriting. For one, the chords he and the band uses are at times technical and complex, and the variation of time signatures that shows up on the more progressive tracks is technical as well. But mostly with technique I was referring to his performance, he does a lot of accelerando and decelerando, and while his scales aren't the most diverse, composition-wise his performances in combination with the instrumentation creates a lot of that technique. Whether it's a good or bad thing is at the judge of the listener.

Well I didn't say there was a lack of atmosphere or sentiment, I said there was a lack of attention to it. One could argue that any song ever has atmosphere inherently but that's neither here nor there. I'm just saying he didn't put enough thought into growing and cultivating an atmosphere because he was so concerned with his own sax performance. I couldn't agree more about Thundercat. I feel like he saw where Kamasi was directing the project and was just like oh so we're just playing whatever the fuck we want then? cool, and just did his own thing, albeit much more technically than Kamasi in regard to scale, etc.

For the most part though I can say we agree. I also think it's very lacking in creativity and direction. Hopefully I explained my piece more, it can get a bit foggy when referring to things like technique and what ground exactly that that covers

dude you're such a crazy memester! xD

too long

couldn't finish

pleb

this is exactly how i feel about every post-funeral arcade fire album

and bon iver

beach house as well

also the national

fuck it i just don't get indie rock

>beach house

not even indie rock at all. Also Bon Iver's albums are like 30 minutes how is that too much for you, that's ludicrous

If you can't listen to a 4 hour+ album in one sitting, you don't really like music and should stick to 3 minute pop ditties and top 40.

IASW isn't even long. fucking plebs honestly

what a horrific drum beat wow

YOU JUST KNOW

That reminds me, Arcade Fire's last album was too long. Not only in total length but the songs themselves. I blame James Murphy. Too many LCD songs are 8 minutes long.

You are a poor reader.
He said that Bitches Brew is a bit long, and that In a Silent Way is much shorter.

>continue listening after the first track
Does anyone do this, all I remember is falling asleep and not really recalling the other tracks. Then every time I try again I would fall asleep again.

>Too long; couldn't finish core

its because they were trying to go for
>muh 12 inch extended mix dance singles
vibe like LCD does

stupid animeposter

that's ok it's not for children :3

Yeah user. Some people actually do have the attention span to listen to music for longer than 15 minutes.

>reading comprehension

I never listened to this all at one time. I think ignoring sides 2 and 3 isn't inexcusable - Miles did better live versions of most those songs anyway
this is a better album. it's hard to see how anyone could ever hate this - but it's really easy to see why people might not passionately love it too: it's very low-key and subtle.
I haven't ever gotten why this is a masterpiece. it took pic related for me to see why he's such a legendary artist (apart from his tone, which - no shit - is the best)
I've never loved anything Herbie's done as leader. when he's on fire like the keyb part on Right Off where John McLaughlin is soloing and Miles is leading the group he's really great.
