Every second you spend listening to atonal music could be spent listening to the greatest music ever composed, that is, that of Mozart, the only composer to have so thoroughly synthetized the chthonian passions of music with the galenian charm of appearance. Being able to resist to the impulse of drama and raw primal forces and channel this energy into pure dramatized expression takes so much strength and will, that even Beethoven no longer was able to do so, and abandoned the attempt at a clear sonata form, instead stretching the basic ideas that Mozart could simply state into large-scale developments who ultimately destroyed the classical symmetry which made this music /meaningful/.

My favourite "variations" set is "The People United Will Never Be Defeated!" - very different to the Bach and Beethoven ones though, it's 20th Century and a lot more dissonant.
Also, other Bach is probably worth recommending - in particular the Well-Tempered Clavier.
