He is right, you are wrong, end of the story burger. We dont use vos or tu for that kind of phrasing, thats what he was trying to say, you already know he is referring to "tu" since "estas" is already in second singular form.

Vos is only used as a plural in Mexican and Castillan spanish, most latin anerica use vos as tu so theres that.

In here we still use tu (unlike in Brazil), but use vocês instead of vós (like Brazil (and French, I believe)).
Some rural/interior places still use vós, though, and it is contagious. Sounds very formal and declamative.

Weird. I feel like we (Portuguese and Brazilians alike) should bring the plural form of the second person.
That and the Pretérito Mais-que-perfeito conjugation. It's so rarely used, but so helpful, sometimes. So unambiguous and latin-sounding.
"Tinha estado" sounds a lot worse than "estara".
