Nah. Forge is the way to go, if you're serious with modding. And they still do the whole de-obfuscation every minor minecraft update. No support from Mojan there.
And the community is beyond toxic. Its a cesspool of "you stole my idea of a dirtblock!"

If you go for quality of life mods for vanilla, you get away with Tekkit/Bukkit.

Mojang themselves think that command-blocks are some kind of mod api.

Quints! Also, command blocks do have their uses, but they were never going to suffice for modding the game. There are a few Forge communities that aren't toxic (like Forgecraft), but others are just shit. And don't even get me started on the Tekkit drama from a few years ago, that was the most toxic drama I've ever seen, and I was once a mod on Gaia online. >.<
One of the higher up people on Tekkit singlehandedly managed to drive half the female modders off minecraft, not to mention they stole mods and claimed them as their own (including Forestry which was well known even then). They did eventually get rid of the assholes, but by that time Tekkit was nearly dead, and they worked hard to make it somewhat popular again, including apologizing to the peoples whose mods they had stolen. It nearly imploded the modding community completely. But on the other hand, it did cause Forge to get created by people fed up with their shit, so...

Yeah, for some reasons a lot of communities go bad quite quickly. The whole Fluff-Fandom seems to do fine, though.

Oh, yeah, i forgot, actually, microsoft re-announce that modding thing. It will be an exclusive XBone and win10 feature (so somebody has pity and buys their stuff already) and you can then write small javascript "mods" changing the game a bit.
Nowhere NEAR what forge can do.

But thats the only way, if you want to ditch java, linux and macOS.

Good to know that they haven't shelved it completely I guess. As for Win10, it's actually a lot better than what people give it credit for. For one, it appears to be the most stable windows version yet, and it isn't as bloated as both Win7 and Win8 were. It also boots considerably faster in my experience, and it can run pretty much everything a win7 or win8 machine could.
But I may be biased as I run Win10 on my desktop (free upgrade, how could I say no, well I could, it just wouldn't be smart as Win 7 is going to be obsolete soonish).

Haven't used a Windows for over 10 years now. I even played WoW with wine all the time.
The only thing that throws me off, is that it phones home so much. And Microsoft keep pushing their shit down every bodies throat.

It's not really work for a single person, few games are. That said, there have been a few gems created by a single person over the years. Like Stardew Valley and Axiom Verge. Heck, even Minecraft started as a labor of love by a single person.
