For a city that is so renowned for its music, why does everything music suck here?

Boston
>Hardcore
>Metal
>Jazz
>Classical
>a palpable selection of everything in moderation
9/10

Los Angeles
>big label pop/hip-pop
>a hollow substandard uncultured version of literally everything
>downtown is completely closed, nothing to see here folks
3/10

Sydney
>post-hardcore
>jazz
>dirty rock'n roll
>bedroom hip-pop
>decent venues for good acts, very little platform/outlet for the rappists, not the best licensing laws to support live music
7/10

Los Angeles has Stones Throw records though. That alone brings them up to at least a 6/10.

>post-hardcore
that brings Sydney down to a 5/10

Chicago

most of the shit that's "made it" is pretty cool. the photo booth where liz phair did the Exile in Guyville cover still works.

all local music is pretty much garage rock ass music with very few exceptions. my favorite local band is probably Varsity.

every single artist on tour comes here so that's a plus.

>Las Vegas
shitting nu-metal, pop punk/emo, and a hip hop scene I haven't looked into yet. All the other music is either a foreign musician with a casino residency or a Motown throwback dinner show.

>>post-hardcore
>that brings Sydney down to a 5/10
eh, post-hardcore shows have all the cutest boys tho. i have a complex rating system.

bump

dont have anything in my "city" but the actual city next to mine has barely anything except alt rock, some jazz, a lot of bandcamp tier stuff, but not that bad. The closest city near me/in my state is Baltimore which may be the most underrated city on the east coast when it comes to music, ambient house, experimental pop all of that

Is the bandcamp city Frederick?

Melbourne has a lot of pretty good indie and psychedelic stuff, a lot of the time you can watch a band perform in some dive and know they'll be big

Washington DC
>tfw DC will never produce exciting music like it did in the 80s ever again

Seattle
>far away from everything so it's not a given that tours will come here
>don't really care for any of the local stuff
I should just move to Japan.

Hartford CT
Its okay

Philadelphia
>pedestrian emo revival
>some good rap (?)
>farcical noise

I don't get out all that much but what I haven't been all that enthused with it. I think people just like the fact there are shows all the time.

>St Louis

>Cincinnati

>Stockholm
fucking yung lean and his friends, a few gravity boys/sad boys off shoot called Europa gang, and a lot of shitty hip hop. And "indie" music

>Hartford
>okay
no

youtu.be/62DGe9i9lGQ

>Broward Motherfucking County

Broward needs better representation than fucking Kodak Black good fuck.

Fuck you Kodak Black is the fucking truth nigga.

...

>Columbus
>Twenty One Pilots

hey but Foodman is coming here soon, and Matmos are doing a washing machine show, that'll be cool. I'm pretty satisfied with what we get out here.

Rio

It's god-tier but not really a Sup Forumstant's paradise.

Dead zone for music

Gave birth to indie in the north thanks to BBS. We also had some big pop acts come from here.
>Toronto now
Drake I guess.

BSS

Can either of you speak for the jazz scene out there?

gay

Yes

Some mega redneck town in Canada.
>karaoke at the locals bar
>old guys doing dad rock covers

compared to what from this year? I think it goes pretty hard.

more like BBC

I don't really follow it so well, it seems like there's some stuff. like I guess Matana Roberts was out here in the beginning of the year for the improvised music festival but I didn't catch it.

There are some qts in Frederick.

I grew up with those people

ok I don't really live there so idk I go on bandcamp a lot though, there are some good record shops as well

>Minneapolis
Decent punk scene, you're fucked if you don't enjoy Atmosphere and Eyedea & Abilities though

Very small town in Michigan.
>Dad rock cover bands
>Shit country covers at local bar

Portland.

No, not THAT Portland. The OLD Portland. The Portland that the Portland in Oregon was named after. The forgotten Portland that's neither as big nor nearly as overrun by hipsters as the new Portland. The Portland in Maine. This tiny little city, situated on the jagged, cold Atlantic coast some 100 miles north of Boston, is home to about 66,000 people; none of which are notable musicians. No punk scene to speak of, no notable folk, nothing -- it's pretty barren. We can't even get most bands to play here, because most of them play at Higher Ground in Vermont instead, on their way to Montreal.

Indeed, the only band from this entire state I've been able to get into has been Arborea, and not only are they from Lewiston, they're not really that special.

Rock n Roll Graveyard is one of my fave shops I've ever been too. Dude is so nice, and everything is wicked cheap

maybe now that weeds legal things will pick up

What website did you copy that text from

u ever fuck with black metal even though
vrasubatlat.bandcamp.com/
salem's super sweet too somehow

I got it from this handy webpage called reddit.com

>portland metal
I think Graves At Sea is the only other thing I've got this year in addition to Smoke Rings

*just from portland in general. smoke rings isnt metal

kek i was just at the Webster last night, forgot how awful the sound is there

what scenes or venues do you frequent
i live a block from thalia hall and everything that passes through there is garbage.

What did DC do musically in the 80s? Everything back then was Los Angeles.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dischord_Records

>Everything back then was Los Angeles.

will have to check out more smoke rings, sound sweet so far
you gotta check out mizmor too if you haven't btw
mizmor.bandcamp.com/album/-

awesome glad you like it

unfortunately their brand new album isn't nearly as good

it linked me to 2012 but I'm gonna jump ahead to this year and start with yodh. I really like this cover art.

lyl what did LA do except produce faggot hairspray bands that almost ruined rock

Dude, the jazz scene here is absolutely bonkers

johnson city, tennessee has folk music, and country music about nascar and jesus, and that's really about it. If you're into those two genres then by god you're gonna have a good fucking time, but anything else gets basically boo'd off stage at any of the local venues. Some rock bands like cage the elephant can thrive at the bigger venues because they can gather people from out of town, but the local places here kinda suck.

lesbian.bandcamp.com/album/hallucinogenesis

>Richmond, Virginia

Some metal
DIY slacker-core
Psychedelic

Kinda low-key stuff really, but a cool developing scene

comet ping pong satanists speak in tongues engaged in bizarre and terrifying ritual

youtube.com/watch?v=LLUn-xX2AYk

comet ping pong satanists call for total destruction of christianity in violent ritual

youtube.com/watch?v=Vk3mpvZ5I9A

comet ping pong satanists celebrate anti-value culture in vile debasement ritual

2/3 too few of those three are dead.

I want to move there

Memphis is a city that used to be.

People are constantly talking about potential returns to former greatness but it's just wishful thinking.
White people are mad that they didn't leave sooner and black people are mad that all the white people are leaving. There's poverty, depression, violence, drugs, and a prison system that resembles a revolving door. Elvis this, basketball that, whatever..

but like an hour from Asheville with the good music tho. Asheville here, local scene is pretty tight with a good mix of DIY punk shit, folk, indie shit, alt rock, etc. Tons of people fuck with making music here so there's gonna be some stuff in other genres as well, just not really established scenes. Downsides are definitely EDM hippy shits (less you're selling acid and shrooms) and about half the rappers (lol @ one of the shittier ones who got raided after video taping a cop and brought in on gun and herron charges, among others). Used to be cool spots downtown for buskers, cyphers, impromptu block parties that turn violent, etc. but the tourism game is fucking that up. That's about all, really.

youtube.com/watch?v=LWQnl9kJDnQ

damn, never blew threw asheville, I'll have to hit it sometime. thanks senpai

>im a retard

what am i supposed to be feeling here

Lil Ugly Mane's from there too, right? Opinions on him aside, how's the hip-hop scene there?

Memphis has spawned possibly the densest possible scene for really good horrorcore and dirty south gangster rap to ever exist. For a city its size and for how many people think it sucks, it must have 2 or 3 dozen rap albums that are well above average in terms of both beats and vocals. Idk if you're white or whatever but regardless you should be proud of that and your chicken, even if honestly the current scene and everything else sucks. I wouldn't be surprised if there's more potential left in Memphis though, since it's not like Blackout and Lil Slim moved out or anything

I'm trying to change that, honey.

look,I get it, my fruitless hours of playing the local joints here passing out CDs and wearing my own fucking band shirt hoping, HOPING, someone would ask about it at the wal-mart or something are being trumped by this 9 year old.

Why do you need to remind me I'm a failure user? I'm well aware

Np boi, I'm surprised you've never been since the Orange Peel regularly has been getting shows that pass over Knoxville. Just mention you're from JC so people don't treat you like a faggot flatlander tourist

a sense of joie de vivre

maybe you could ride her coattails

i dont even know what kind of music scene vancouver has
i only see shows from bands that are touring these days

I'm really enjoying Yodh thanks. The vocals remind me a lot of the most recent Mayhem

>Memphis has spawned possibly the densest possible scene for really good horrorcore and dirty south gangster rap to ever exist.
that's all good and everything but creativity seems to be dwindling

any young person pursuing any kind of dream basically has to leave Memphis for the greater good, it's nothing but deadend jobs here.

yo, yeah, glad you like it
while you're at it though you have to check these guys out too loweryourhead.bandcamp.com/album/hell-iii

Is this the most recent thing they're released?

it's the latest full-length of theirs i've heard, looks like they put another one out in 2014, haven't listened to that ever though

that's a shame fren. i been hearing that gangs are getting bigger there too, which we don't get anywhere else in the south than TN and Florida really, so that's gotta put some pressure on the average fella.
