Are you a hipster who owns a macbook and likes coffee shops?

Congratulations! You can call yourself a free-lance journalist

(Unless you're some kind of minority, left wing sites - i.e them most visited sites - won't hire you btw)

Step 1: stop being a nigger and get a real job.

>Find a niche
>Post on Sup Forums
>Collect porn pictures
>Expect results in few weeks if you work hard

Find a local, probably independent, publisher. Someone with access to printing capabilities. You'll likely have to start as a chief editor and hire some friends to collect stories and conduct interviews and research in and around town. you might want to start with just one issue a month - or three to two weeks, depending on how well your writing and team is. And money is a factor here as well.

Or just be a salve to some biased journalist outlet. Some pop culture catering trash full of fake or dying ads, reporting on small businesses with no face and popularity that secretly probably pay your boss to give them some publicity.

What are you intending on writing about OP? What's your style?

I am more focused on political issues

Pitch unique ideas to people in your area. local magazines are a good place to start.

Build up a portfolio by doing something often. Weekly blog on a website in your city. Music blog / alcohol beer / etc are good places to start. Local magazines have high turnover rate.

You never want to do something for free, but small places will usually only hook you up with free music / shows / booze in return. This is ok. Keep a regular job though.

Pitch ideas to bigger outlets, something you know a lot about. In your case probably anime / shitty memes.

Move on and up etc etc.

Become a staff writer for National Review.

Okay, so do you plan to single-handedly report on every political slant in current news? Or are you feeling like attacking one party - one politician at a time?
Political science or real world issues and economics?

Who needs, and who wants, to hear what you have to say?

Write some fan-fiction or a short story for Playboy, or write for Hustler and win some used panties. I suggest setting some short-term writing goal(s) and then expanding outwards.

>This guy knows what he's talking about.
Also OP, watch '24 Hour Party People' and 'CBGB' - features writers starting their own magazines. Check out and look around or post for some related writer based movies.

>Also you need a really nice pen, that you can refill, engraved or whatever, never lose it. Invest in leather bound notepad.

Whats about Photojournalism?
Get some qt3.14 to take pictures and you can provide the story.

Nail some politicians.
Cedric The Entertainer - I'm gonna nail yo ass!

Don't even bother. Most sites, even major ones, don't pay people. You'll be working for "exposure" and nothing more.

Good luck man. I work for a newspaper, and i pull in crazy hours with barely any pay. Freelancers have it worse, they get undercut all the time. You could do some local photojournalism by going to local sporting events and shooting them, and then try to sell them to your local paper, also if you know how to report and write about town hall meetings alot of small papers will pay you to cover them, because they fucking suck and you have to stay the whole time while they bitch about george not mowing his lawn.

Familiarize yourself with as many magazine as you can. It's good to know your competition and find some inspiration.

Also, there are some really nice autobiographies out there written by some of the greatest journalists in history that have lived through war and traveled the world.

>pic unrelated but sort of related

They're not called freelance journalists any more. They're called "bloggers."

Start a blog you lazy nigger, and if anyone is actually interested by what you write (they won't be) you'll get contacted by some shitty e-magazine. Probably some trash like Buzzfeed, IF you're lucky.

The future belongs to robo-journalism.

The only things wroth writing about, whether they are about you or someone else, will not confine you to a room with a computer screen.
The stories are out there with the people, who want to read about other people. Have a vision and purposeful drive OP. Don't sell your self short or at all. Don't falter when you reach a limit.

Shut up, quads. He isn't going to write a story online about some other online story. That's a poisonous cycle of failure and redundant bullshit ads.

Not everyone wants to make a living by sitting in their chairs and never leaving their houses.

Nice quads though, forreal

>ahh the world travelling freelance journalist
Yeah that doesnt happen unless you are Anderson Cooper with his millions in vanderbilt money. Also if op isnt trained in AP style, good luck selling anything to a publication that isnt a blog.

Anyone wanting or thinking about becoming a 'freelance' anything, I'll try to keep this thread bumping as I can OP until you realize at least that writing about politicians would be pretty weak unless you have some basic college education in politics, law, and/or writing with enough real world experience and an understanding of what the people expect.

Fortunately for you there are free online college courses on sites like 'edX'.

But that's the point. A freelance journalist who is fucking serious about writing isn't doing it for money.

Do you guys have any idea what freelance even is?

Do you have any idea how much money it takes to travel? You are talking about op going out and writing stories, this is impossible if he is broke and cant get to the stories. Yeah the whole "freelance bum writer" is a nice dream, but so is eating in the next 3 weeks.

Then writing has to be a hobby. Exposure doesn't feed you and pay the rent.

Just throw your soul in the trash and turn in your freedom card.

Join the blue collar workers of America. And why not join a Union while your at it?
Those low IQ individuals of the population who edit and write repetitive garbage for some of the largest media outlets in the world are doing a great service to those uneducated masses with no opinions of their own. And we have media experts and marketers to spin memes and humor-based ads and pictures for the subliminal and subconscious attraction of today's mindless children
who will some day be the leading forces in the world. And someday they'll choose a color to vote for. Good luck writing about politics OP, wherever you are, or went.

>Keep a regular job though

Just buy a van, grab some niggas, and do freelance work on the side or save up some money while preparing future stories in your free time.
>What's good?

Don't mind this post. Just a testing something.

I did it for 8 years.

Just start writing video game reviews. You don't even have to play the game. Just go to Sup Forums, see what they are saying and then write the opposite while throwing in key sjw words and phrases. Congratulations you're a free Lance journalist.

You won't see results until you're in the ground.

>still not understanding
The point is the keep your head a float. You cant do that roaming around the country side in a van, and you definitely cant do that with a team of niggas. If he wants this as his main source of income, that is damn near impossible, unless he minimizes costs. This includes staying at home and blog writing. Im in the journalism business, and we contract freelancers at our paper, they make no money and are just housewives who are bored. You can make your own media group, but unless you cut costs everywhere it will last 6 months top.

I can either try to explain why I believe that to be stupid, or I can play some guitar or jack off and smoke a cigar to finish.

Believe what you want hippy, but the media industry is cut throat.

And there's always new people waiting in the wings to do it for free.

Yep. That is why freelancing is a joke

>believes only writers can freelance their skills and only at a cheap price

you fags aren't fooling anyone

>thinks freelancing is anything other than begging
Now tell me how you freelance graphic design for 200 dollars a design, kek.

Here's a great story about the modern media landscape if you'd like to see how it works from the inside. This guy wrote about sports, which should have a fairly wide appeal, but this is basically how it works across the entire online journalism landscape. I guess some people just need to experience it firsthand to see how things in the industry really work. deadspin.com/the-top-200-ways-bleacher-report-screwed-me-over-1608499729

Learn how to spell, first.

Otherwise fuck off

;) i don't work. I just go to college so I can experience the world some day, no matter how long it takes
man I've downloaded Photoshop like 3 times in the past, no joke, never fucked with it. even tried video editing and other photo editing software, but nothing. I just can't get into you know? ive spent the most time editing music, and i've spent 100x+ that time actually playing music

What is your point?

And I'm not trying to discourage people from writing. I think good journalism is vital to society. Just write because you love it. You could wind up being one of the lucky few who manage to scrape by enough to survive off of writing alone, but don't count on it.

The ludicrous amount of time we spend on the computer could be spent actually putting our skills and talents to use. And freelancing would allow you to become a (enter dream job) without not only finding an employer but becoming your own boss. It's also a great way to spend your downtime, doing what you love for a good cause.

Yes, but it wont feed you. That has been my whole point, dont try to live off it.
