what does Sup Forums think about anime? films specifically
I don't consider myself an anime fan, and looking back there's not a single anime series I've watched that I consider essential viewing, but I've recently been watching some anime films and I do
it's a complete different medium and way to make films, is it fair that all of it be disregarded?
It's ok but japanese humor is too into dumb, annoying comic relief characters and wacky facial expressions.
Jose Reed
The format is better, the content hardly ever is. Movies have the same issue though. It's why series and books are things. You're too fixated on what's 'essential' and what's not. Fun things are fun. And that's also a purpose
Jacob Walker
Paprika is awesome.
also, thismany stupid movies or series like hollywood and a few pretty excellent.
Jackson Stewart
Then fuck off out of here.
Carter Young
Satoshi Kon ended up being the real modern Hitchcock, not M Night Shamwow.
Anthony White
It's a pretty trashy medium desu but there are a couple of series worth watching.
I might watch maybe one series every 1 or 2 months but nothing more.
I've been meaning to watch more anime film but I'd honestly rather just stick to live action film.
Easton Bell
What's some essentiaal anime to start with, Sup Forums? I like Paprika and pretty much every Miyazaki movie
only seen Death Note as far as shows go
Kevin Parker
Tentai Senshi Sunred and Cromartie High are hilarious though
Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, the list goes on
Jaxon Foster
Monster Ghost in the Shell(1st movie and the Stand Alone Complex series) Baccano Cowboy Bebop
Start off with these, they aren't too weird and good for newcomers.
I wouldn't recommend something like Evangelion to newcomers personally, since it's not universally liked(Though it's probably in my top 10).
Ethan Ross
Spirited Away won a Golden Bear and Best Picture in Japan. And an Oscar for whatever that's worth. It's also the highest grossing movie in Japan of all time.
Are you sure you aren't confusing TV and movi anime here?
Lincoln Bailey
both fampai
awesome, thank you
Benjamin Brooks
>cowboy bebop Don't.
William Davis
Cowboy Bebop is a solid 7/10.
Not GOAT like some people believe but still fun. Get off your high horse.
Gavin Ross

I enjoy a lot of medium's cliches and the pozi vibes of most of the shows work for me but it's perfectly fine if a person doesn't like it.
Objectively speaking if we asssume that purpose of art is the persuit of truth then the vast majority of anime shows fail at that, but there is about the same quantity of really great anime as there are tv shows.
With anime movies I would say the percent of great ones is higher than regular movies but it's simply because there are much more regular movies.
All-in-all it's a legit medium that has a barrier of entry thanks to some of it's quirks. As with anything you shouldn't force yourself to like it but, on the other hand, if you do like it allow yourself to enjoy it.
Angel Garcia
it´s pretentious filler
>high horse Nice Freudian
Charles Myers
Overrated shit
Jackson Hernandez
>Cowboy Bebop >Pretentious Are you fucking retarded?
Landon Morales

Jonathan Peterson
>more namecalling Sasuga Sup Forums
Carson King
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust was one of the first anime films I watched, and it got me into the medium. It has a bit of teenage edginess to it with the whole half vampire/half human protagonist, but it's very stylistic and well animated. Also surprisingly romantic. It's Gothic horror/action done right I think.
Nolan Long
If you think you have the series figured out based on that image, I have bad news for you.
Mason Clark
>muh genre deconstruction Manchildren pls go and stay go
Justin Adams
I've watched Madoka, I thought it was overrated and a failed attempt at a deconstruction.
Camden Brooks
I don't need to watch the whole series to figure out that anything with superhero lolis is going to be garbage, even if it is "ironic" loli capeshit
Jace Ross
I never said anything about any deconstruction.
>muh deconstruction
Seriously?
It doesn't have superheroes or lolis and it isn't ironic.
Hunter Brooks
I don't know what to recommend you, if you only go for the best of the best the medium is going to get stale quick for you. Anyway here's a list of the very best (well, at least in my opinion): Evangelion (pinnacle of the medium) Ping Pong Tatami Galaxy Legend of the Galactiv Heroes FLCL Satoshi Kon's filmography Shinsekai Yori Monogatari series Aoi Bungaku Kino's Journey
Kayden Thomas
THIS also Mushishi(it deserves more attention)
and Nichijou for fun
Nathan Hill
>Shinsekai Yori ya blew it
Xavier Torres
Anime is the same as all different forms of media, it has some aspects which it excels at and some which it does not, and just like the other forms of media some idiots will praise it as the best, completely ignoring its problems, and some will completely disregard it, completely ignoring good points.
Julian Allen
I can't work out if Mushishi turned from poignant and contemplative to boring and empty or if I did but i can't enjoy the newer episodes and i used to love it.
Evan Russell
anime?
more like shitime lol
Matthew Kelly
Just stick with Satoshi Kon and you'll be alright
Kevin Miller
atmosphere was same, animation got little better.
i loved zoku shou.
Camden Garcia
op here, yeah I watched all satoshi kon films and liked them all, even tokyo godfathers, maybe should have specified that, I wanted to know what else is out there
I downloaded ghost in the shell and akira for the moment.
Josiah Ortiz
Wouldn't know, my tastes don't include shit as one the categories.
Camden Brooks
looks very japanese anything that isn't japanese? for the sake of variety
Leo Morgan
In what world are 7/10s something you'd recommend?
Lucas Davis
>Shinsekai Yori Fuck that noise, this point was the last straw for me.
Watch Nagi no Asu
Kayden Barnes
What's wrong with it? It's literally on the level of 1984 and Brave New World.
Xavier Rodriguez
>non japanese anime u wot m8
Kevin Flores
Set in a favela.
Music produced by Shinichiro Watanabe. It's great.
Hunter Wood
Essential anime series are Eva, Utena, FLCL, Lain, Bebop, Mononoke, Dennou Coil, Texhnolyze, Ashita no Joe, Heidi, Akage no Anne, Tatami Galaxy, Ie Naki Ko, Future Boy Conan, Kare Kano, Mushishi, Gunbuster + Diebuster, Nichijou, Hyouka, Space Dandy and Birdy Decode.
Most of these for the storyboarding or animation.
Anthony Bennett
Perfect Blue > Black Swan
Bentley Thomas
I was memed into watching this. Not really that good.
Jonathan Turner
Watching this in theaters sure was something.
I don't watch anime regularly, but yeah, there are great films to be seen in the format, but they are rare. I guess it is ultimately up to the audience and if they can lose themselves in something clearly foreign to them that dictates how it is perceived compared to live-action and CGI. Those already into Japanese media do not care, but worldwide anime carries a stigma of sorts. To me, a film is a film, and it is no secret that a cartoon can move people in ways a normal film can, and in ways it cannot.
Carter Watson
whole thread and no full metal alchemist.
WTF?
Mushishi is episodic series with good imagery and excellent soundtrack. Pretty "mature" stuff in the series. There is no samurai, ninja or moe loli shit.(if that is what you meant by japanese)
Landon Adams
duh
Cooper Lopez
>To me, a film is a film This is how I started watching anime at the turn of the millennium. They were just Japanese movies and TV shows that I watched alongside live action ones, I didn't think anything more of it.
But most people now have all these pre-conceived, pre-packaged ideas about "anime," even if they've never watched any.
Mason Hughes
Fma is garbo.
So is brotherhood
Landon Brown
Madoka Magica is the only anime that I have enjoyed.
Currently watching Evengelion slowly because I heard they are similar.
Andrew Powell

So true. >Perfect Blue >Tokyo Godfathers >Paprika >Paranoia Agent (trippy series)
Brotherhood is great. Original anime series was pretty lacking in plot and extra characters, but Brotherhood retains a lot of the complex plot from the manga.
AND IVE SEEN A LOT OF FUCKING ANIME LITERALLY A BETTER VERSION OF MAD MAX
DEBATE ME- OH WAIT GO FUCK YOURSELF

What's your favorite Miyazaki and why is it Princess Mononoke?
Grayson Ward
it is a solid 7.5-8/10
also, more additions: 1. Planetes 2. Usagi Drop 3. Berserk 4. Rurouni Kenshin (atleast 4 episode OVA) 5. Ergo Proxy 6. Eve no Jikan 7. Gintama 8. Welcome to the NHK 9. Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show(for weird stuff) 10. Wolf Children.
Also, i have only watched 2-3 episodes of Tokyo ghoul. Anime and manga both are shit, but soundtrack is GOAT.
Lucas Smith
funny watching fags argue this shit isn't a "magical girl show" that children can't watch.
Caleb Reyes
>anime thread on Sup Forums >literally nothing but Sup Forums shitters recommending entry level shit
how do you fool yourself into thinking welcome to nhk is good. the anime is same cliche garbage as many other dude meets a bunch a girls with problems harem bullshit.
Xavier Thomas
>I'm a contrarian that thinks anything popular is bad I would say suck a dick, but I don't think you could fit anymore in there buddy.
Levi Watson
Space Dandy is great. What's that matter, don't you like fantastic animation and boobies?
Gavin Hughes
The manga is better desu. It's like an entirely different story
Nolan Reyes
You clearly haven't watched it.
Tyler Johnson
Of course you think it's good, Sup Forums kids love juvenile le boobies XD humor.
Carson Butler
If you want to watch anime with excellent animation, check out Hibike! Euphonium
A lot of live action movies are equally or even more "juvenile," but it's ok because they're live action and that somehow changes everything.
And if you're so deathly afraid of anything "juvenile" then you can simply watch shows like Shirobako, Shouwa Genroku, Serial Experiments Lain and Aoi Hana instead.
Adrian Murphy
>no Gundam >no Macross >no VOTOMS Other than that, decent list.
James Adams
