Gonna repost this shamelessly. I need feedback.
First time recording vocals, it's super rough still but I figured I'd get it out to see what you guys say.
>tfw no idea how to process vocals
>tfw cringe at my own shit

dude you have to mix it from scratch. never ever ever mix into a limiter. a monkey could pull a mix off with a limiter on the mix bus.

go back to square one, and get your balance right in the basics. the drums, piano/synth, all out of whack with each other. the sounds are perfectly fine, they're just balanced poorly.

put this song into some kind of space, pick some reverbs or (subtle!) delays or something that you can use to liven it up a bit, add some richness. make if feel like we're sharing the same space as listeners. subtle spatial cues like that make everything real.

as for your vocal, get a nice well-set compressor going on your voice. don't overdo it. accentuate this with post-compressor fader rides (zoom way in and detail that shit if you have to). DON'T OVERDO THE COMPRESSOR it'll sound like sandpaper and shit. your vocal NEEDS a few vocal tricks:
1. automated/intermittent delays or reverbs (subtle!)
2. a light steady reverb that doesn't sound like a small room - something that sounds like a big room but light and airy, and use very little of it.
3. doubles - throw in doubled vocals on certain words, phrases, etc. you can fake doubles with a short delay but it's best to record them so they have personality.
4. once all this is in place and you have a decent balanced mix come back and we'll talk sonic hooks and production

Fucking nice, thanks for this. Yeah I mixed the instrumental without a limiter, I just slapped it on quickly after I did the vocals just because I had some minor clipping in one or two places that I didn't have time to fix. But your post is gold for me right now man.

Cool, I hope it helps at least a little. Sometimes the best thing can just be changing your headspace a little and working on something with fresh goals in mind. Getting a balance can be rotten sometimes, but I think if you start fresh with all the faders down, get some effects sends setup, and start working the faders up it'll take a whole new form as you work.

this is the best advice ive seen given in /prod/ for a long time desu

...

We would all be making awesome shit if all advice was as good as this. You done good, man.

I'm wanting to get into abstract rap a la "Antipop Consortium," "Beck," and folks like that.

Should I kill myself?

Been using FL studio to record metal. It's fucking awful and I hate it. ASIO4ALL makes me want to fucking neck myself. Any recommendations for a DAW that is friendly for recording real instruments and shit?

Cubase

Pro Tools
Reason (post v.5)
Reaper
Logic
Cubazi
Audacity
Garageband

Should've mentioned, I'm on Windows

yea, Cubase

Pro Tools
Reason (post v.5)
Cubazi
Audacity

i use cubase 8.5 pro and it is the best daw imo i run windows 8.1 os and no problems with preformance

Reaper

Is free

Planning on building a new PC soon for audio production and trying to pick a motherboard for an Intel i7 6700. I see some boards that advertise themselves as being gaming mobos. Is that just marketing or is there actually something about them that's helpful for gaming? I don't play video games so I dont' want to spend extra on features or optimizations that aren't going to be useful for me.

and shit.

does anybody here know where to find GRM plug ins for win? THANKS IN ADVANCE

it is just marketing imo most people disable all of the power saving and dynamic cpu settings in bios

holy fuck the Korg Sample is a pain in the dick to use

I reckon it'll take me a while to figure this shit out. I just had a really nice loop going and then I twisted one knob and everything stopped and I can't get back

clyp.it/gsc4nyzh

Record your jams and noodling into your daw always.

The Volca sample is pretty fucking good IMO

I'm looking for the cheapest and easiest way to self-record a small demo in my basement, going for a very fuzzy/distorted sound so I don't care about quality. Any suggestions? I was thinking about just doing it on a simple multi-track tape machine but I don't really know where to go from there.

>I don't care about quality.
You're an idiot then. You can degrqade the quality/add fuzz etc after if you want, but you can't clean up a dirty signal.

Can someone please help. I'm trying to install Reaktor 6 on Mac but everytime I try dragging two ensembles in the panel I get a message saying it's not activated even though I used the cracks. I've tried this with multiple torrents and different versions of OS X.

That's what you get for using a mac faggot.

If you spend the ridiculous amount of money needed to get a mac they think they've got a sucker and you're expected to pay.

However, the trojan in the keygen will have worked, don't worry. And of course you have no firewall or AV on your mac because "LOL it's immune to viruses!"

hahahahaha faggot.

what's wrong with you?

Heterosexuality.

Reason is for psytrance producers who still think it's 2001.

they all do different things and are equally valid.

Dear Sup Forums,

The danger posed by trap beats and Fruityloops users for our people today finds expression in the undeniable aversion of wide sections of our people. The cause of this aversion is not to be found in a clear recognition of the consciously or unconsciously systematic and pernicious effect of the Fruityloops users as a totality upon our nation. Rather, it arises mostly from personal contact and from the personal impression which the individual tone deaf kid leavesalmost always an unfavorable one. For this reason, hating trap is too easily characterized as a mere emotional phenomenon. And yet this is incorrect. Antitrapism as a political movement may not and cannot be defined by emotional impulses, but by recognition of the facts. The facts are these: First, trap beats is absolutely shit and not good. Even the Fruityloops users never designate themselves as tone deaf kids, tone deaf kidish Poles, or tone deaf kidish Americans but always as German, Polish, or American Fruityloops users. Fruityloops users have never yet adopted much more than the language of the foreign nations among whom they live. A German who is forced to make use of the French language in France, Italian in Italy, Chinese in China does not thereby become a Frenchman, Italian, or Chinaman. It's the same with the tone deaf kid who lives among us and is forced to make use of the German language. He does not thereby become a German. Neither does the Mosaic faith, so important for the survival of this race, settle the question of whether someone is a tone deaf kid or nontone deaf kid. There is scarcely a DAW whose members belong exclusively to just one definite religion.

Just say I'm off key, I won't get mad lol. I just thought it sounded cool

is 25 buttons too little for music making? im going to work on reason and the midi keyboard. which of these are best? im looking for that helps me make the most diverse electronical/techno/digi musik.

thomann.de/gb/akai_lpk_25.htm
this looks nice and has some beatmachine like buttons.

thomann.de/gb/miditech_garagekey_mini.htm
nothing ecxept more keys. is it important?

thomann.de/gb/miditech_i2_mini_32.htm
here is a inbetween the two one.

so pls recomend me one lads

I'm on 10.8.5 and I have reaktor 5 working, do you absolutely need 6?

Any suggestions for synth VSTs?

I mostly produce techno and house. Looking for something with really solid presets since I don't really like designing synthesis, but don't mind modifying things a bit.

clyp.it/kibx1pqw
Am i getting better?

If you actually play the piano, like 4+ years or something then you might find it limiting. Otherwise it's probably fine. sorry no recs

who here /logicmasterrace/?

I use logic for my typical instrument songs (guitar/bass/drums). It's great for that but I think Ableton is way more useful if you need electronic elements.

You honestly don't need anything sophisticated. All the house and techno classics were made on old workhorses like the 303, the Juno 106 and the Korg M1. Personally I prefer using samples and manipulating them, and I find ableton's built in samplers good enough for that.

get one with 49 so you can at least play some extended chords, I fell for the meme pads and knobs on the akai mpk mini and they suck and I never use them
25 is very restricting, you have to switch octaves in the middle of playing or you end up having to add missing notes in the midi editor afterwards, it's just inconvenient

B-but i use FL and i absolutely hate trap...

chill trap possible?

Ive been using fl studio for live instruments for ever, like sonce right after they changed from fruity loops.

Things like drum sets, acoustic groups or full bands that track all at once go into pro tools, but if im at most recording 2 tracks i just use fl.

I dont use asio4all, its trash. I use my interface driver. Asio4all always gave me latency issues. Also, if DI, dont listen to yourself play through the program, use your interfaces real monitoring option. Guitar will be clean, but itll be in time. Then just route the track you recorded to a mixer channel and insert your favorite amp sim. You can route multiple tracks to the same mixer channel say you need to punch in some parts and need the same sound.

Can i get a rate
>clyp.it/gqvuksw3

you're cringy as fuck

Dude if you want to free yourself from ASIO4ALL get an interface. Something like a scarlett 18i6 and then use the asio drivers for that.

you can actually hear more than one application at a time

i think FL is great for both

...

Is there a plugin I can use check to see what key my song/track is in?

Anyone finding good Black Friday deals on gear?

If I get deals on software it's not as fun. Then again, I should probably just wait for deals on post Christmas restocked items.

I don't know but to know what keyg your song is in just look at the notes that you used.

For example if you didn't use any black keys (sharps or flats) in your song then it's safe to assume it's in C major or A minor. Why? Because those scales only use normal notes.

>normal notes

Yo i'm seriously thinking of buying this.

And the waves gold bundle too. Can anybody think of a good reason to not buy these or only buy one?

I might only get the waves gold one and the abbeyroad reverb plates vst. It's a shit ton of plug-ins.

>Can anybody think of a good reason
waves is outdated trash with exceptionally shit support and their new license center thing is complete bullshit
mercury and waves live venue bundle owner here

When i get back my home and if i'm not too lazy

sooo the plug-ins aren't good? do you use'em?

On the other hand the crysonic thing is only $40 bucks so it's not much of a loss

I only use the cla-2a and 3a and puigtecs sometimes to save processing power on the uad and the other thing I use sometimes is loair
everything else got replaced in my workflow because there's way better, faster, sleeker and less buggy things out there. the last times waves was doing something seemingly new was 2003 or so

So you wouldn't say the gold bundle is worthwhile for the 179 bucks?

In retro spect the crysonics stuff looks like snake oil... I'd rather use my $40 for something else.

If anything I like the abbey roads reverb plug in. Looks useful.

all the waves alorithmic reverbs are trash, IMO
there's stuff like valhalladsp and exponential audio out there to which none of the waves stuff can even remotely compare
the only useful reverb thing is IR1 so you can throw away internal IRs and use the bricasti if you don't have a convolver already but that's also obsolete since SIR2

ive tried telling them, its too late.

Oh shit I should've thought of asking that

what plug ins do you recommend? like for the basic things like a compressor, a reverb, a delay, a eq etc

-fab filter pro bundle are my absolute bread and butter plugins
-soundtoys everything, worth it for echo boy, radiator and decapitator alone
-check out plugin alliance for specialized things like the maag eqs, original spl transient designer and some other cool stuff, they have good deals pretty often
-el arousor is hands down the best compressor in existence, is as good as the el8x
-t-racks pultec and la2a are really good but I gave my t-racks bundle away when I got the uad because I really only used these two
-already mentioned valhalla and exponential audio (especially the phoenix) for fantastic algorithmic reverbs, I'm a massive IR user though, I make my own IRs when ever I get near hardware reverbs I like

synths

Post Black Friday sales/promotions. Hopefully I can pick a new hardware synth for cheap.

Soundtoys are offering their Tremolator plug-in for free www.soundtoys.com/product/tremolator/

screen capped
thanks so much user

crysonic is 100% a scam

>pick up a new hardware synth for cheap
yo man post whatever sales or specials you can find here dude let us know what's good

Hey Sup Forums, looking for advice for a Christmas gift for my mother.

My mom loves singing and has gone to a small studio to record before but I would like to buy her a basic set up for a personal studio.

What does a basic personal studio entail? I'd like to get her a nice microphone but aside from that I have no idea.

If I could get a list of what I need for a personal studio and some good brands I would be really appreciative.

My mom sings country/pop type music and plays the piano if that helps narrow down certain choices

going through the chain from recording to monitoring with examples:
>a stereo pair of condensers for the piano (rode nt5)
>large dia condenser for the vocals (rode nt1a)
>microphone stands, a pop screen, some 10 meter xlr cables
>audio interface with at least two preamps (focusrite scarlet 2i4)
>daw software (reaper, cubase)
>speakers (yamaha hs5)
>headphone amp to put at the piano/vocal booth while tracking (art headamp)
>headphones for monitoring (beyer dt770)

that's basically the minimum

Mic, interface, headphones, mic stand. B&H, Musiciansfriend, Guitar Center, etc. have recording packages if you look them up.

What does she have for a piano? Something that can go into the computer or an acoustic/real piano that would have to be recorded as well?

Also bumpin' for my creamy synths

>excluding asshole Uzbekistan
Based

where to download nexus? I am afraid I aint wanting no zika on my baby boy laptop

>clyp.it/x3kc124a
I think it sounds fine

audionews

>audionews
i dont have invite code

wait till 1-2 december and you can sign up with no invite code

PS:
hearing a nexus preset makes most people ignore your beats, try being creative with it.

>wait till 1-2 december
Ah shit

What is everyone eating turkey with their families or something

bump

I was going to post this on another thread, but that one is gone now.
clyp.it/bvatvmrv
Fuck.

It's warm and makes me feel good inside. Th-this is Merzbow? Mkay

Just fucking buy it. Reaktor is without a doubt the best value bit of software I have ever spent my money on.

>I use logic for my typical instrument songs (guitar/bass/drums). It's great for that but I think Ableton is way more useful if you need electronic elements.
Can any one of you ableton users explain/tell me exactly what ableton does that other DAWs can't do?

nothing

it comes with a moral superiority dongle that's compatible with most Sup Forums threads

In the long run, pro tools is the way to go. Interface is shitty at first but it has every tool you could ever want, plus it's really worth being familiar the industry standard.

>industry standard

>tfw have to finish 3 tracks in the next two days. Yeah I'm going to enjoy this Turkey for now

clyp.it/4l4wehkc
Thoughts on this?
I don't know what genre this would be considered or what improvements I could make

it is, but that's completely irrelevant for personal use
