It's a manga that's been running for 20+ years now, and it's pretty incredible. One of the things that's most interesting about it, is that the author has basically reinvented himself in his style several times throughout the series, while still keeping it true to its roots. During the first 10 volumes (referred to collectively as the "Golden Age" arc), it's basically gritty 80s style manga of purely dark medieval warfare, becoming borderlined historical fiction. but in volumes 11-12+ literally hell opens up and pours itself onto earth evil dead style but in a completely serious manner. Over the next ~5 volumes you have every bit of bad in his world corrupted and risen to full blown demonic rape-fests; corrupt priests burning everyone at the stake, packs of roving goblins kidnapping women, raping and impregnating them to make more monsters, an evil god-emporer who tries to take over the world etc. It then turns into a traditional swords/sorcery fantasy where Guts assembles a team of rag-tag heroes to destroy the five God Hands of hell, one of whom was his best friend and rival during the Golden Age.

Thanks user, I never knew much about this manga except the recognizable main character and I thought it was just a short story and a couple movies. Now it sounds really interesting and I'll look into it sometime. Long running mangas that are still quality are few and far in between.

I gave a review on /a, who absolutely hates it.
As a fan its ok. They have taken a lot of liberties. For what it is, it is ok.
Also watch this after you see the episode. Someone put the original intro on the opening and it is millions of times better. Not just the song but what this guy cut from the current opening also makes it better.

yeah, I have to say that the current opening really annoys me. As an existing fan its ok but they put a graphic image of femto raping casca in it and I feel it spoils it for anyone who would watch it and want to read the manga. Also it just cheapens the impact since you see casca getting raped to rock music before the beginning of each episode.

They use the opening as a way to summarize all the important past events. I feel like its as if Game of Thrones had an opening with a theme song and it showed the Red Wedding and all the deaths of major characters as a way to introduce each episode.
