Can you outrun the darkness forever?

How do I get over the shin splints I get when I try to run?

If it makes a difference I'm trying to "toe strike" to avoid fucking up my knees.

Where you run tho?

OP is kill

If this isn't some reference post does running help a lot with the depression? I might try it.

no, depression usually catches up with me

I'm not OP (seems like he abandoned the thread) but I am I like to run for fitness, but it helps me when I'm having a shitty day too. I think The Oatmeal does a good job explaining why:

How do I get back? I used to be like you, then a series of shit happened and now I am too depressed to even think about leaving the flat for anything other than the basics

thanks for the info

could be a couple of things, running on your forefoot puts a ton of stress on you calves, so you might need to to some weighted calf lifts, or it could be the shoes you're wearing. most running shoes at 8mm heel to toe offset, if you have shin splints i'd recommend trying a 4mm offset. run on softer surface, like a track or trails.

Interesting. I walk on my toes a lot naturally, but I've never done weighted calf lifts. I'll give that a try.

And I do have some minimalist running shoes (TrailGlove's I think? I don't remember the exact name, but they're paper thin on the bottom the whole length of the shoe).

>run on softer surface
Hmm, I have been running on sidewalks and bike paths (all cement). I'll try running to the side in the grass and see if it helps.

Thanks!

baby steps, run/walk..you need to ease your body back into it. Take it slow, it's worth it if you see it through.

Eat better and less. You can't outrun your diet. Exercising helps you get more fit, but if you want to lose weight you have to intake less calories than you burn, period.

minimalist running is something you really need to ease yourself into. I'd recommend running in something like a Saucony Kinvara or anything similar..4mm offset but a decent amount of cushioning ..it takes time and consistent running to harden bones and strengthen tendons. You can defiantly run in minimalist shoes but it takes time to get your legs that hard.

I feel like I've been easing into it. I've been at it for about 2-3 months or so. I run for a bit (more like a quick jog at best) for a couple minutes till my muscles get sore and then slow down to a walk. Walk for a little bit then jog some more. I feel like out of a 4-5 mile outing I'm only actually running maybe 2 miles of it or so?

Still, the next day I'm alright, but the day after that my shins are just killing me. Am I going too hard?

Not the other guy, but...
Are you new at running? If so, you might just be doing too long distances. You need to ease into it, and not overestimate yourself, which is very easy to do.

I would not do calf lifts if you are a beginner, that comes later when you can run a good distance without getting splints.

Merrell whatergloves are nice to run in, but they are expensive for what they are, as is all the other "minimalist" shoes. If you want to save money I would just get some good old racing flats. Kung fu shoes are also nice if you can get those, as they are usually dirt cheap.

Last answer was not OP, If you're heavy you can still run. It doesn't take a lot to get your cardio up. But if you're heavier you're gonna want to run with shoes that have a lot of cushion and I'd recommend sticking to trails or a track at the beginning. When you run the weight of each stride is your weight times 5..so it can really take a toll. But if you get into running on the regular, you will loose a ton of weight and you don't really need to reduce your caloric intake.

Yeah, I mentioned in that I've been at it for 2-3 months or so now. I definitely wasn't a runner before, just walked a lot.

As for the calf lifts, I've walked on my toes for most of my life. Weird habit, but it's made my calves pure muscle despite being a bit chubby.

I've already got the Merrell Trailgloves. They're nice, I like em. Cost isn't too bad, as long as they last a decent amount of time.

Maybe I'm just running too hard, it sounds like.

is medial or anterior pain?

Both words I'm not totally familiar with, to be honest. So I apologize if my Googling didn't give me the exact meaning you're looking for.

It feels like it's in the bone itself, but on the front half, if that makes sense. So if you were to poke at my shin from the front, it would be painful, but I "feel" it down in the bone itself.

If it's pain on the inside of your shins then you might be over pronating, in that case you might need shoes with some stability or you might benefit from orthotics. .

Interesting, I had never heard of this before! I'm reading up on over pronation right now and seeing if there's something I can do with my form to fix it.

Thanks for the tip!

If you never ran much before then it will take some time for you to get better. Especially if you are a bit chubby as you say. I know, since I started running when I hit the 100 kg mark. And took months to get any good distance.

But you also didn't mention how often you run?
You have to let your muscles rest.

is the pain more prominent on the outsides of legs or the inside, i know it centralized along the bone, but like the residual pain ..is that on the inside of your leg or the outsief?>

>Especially if you are a bit chubby as you say
I'm 6' tall and right around 210 pounds at the moment.

>But you also didn't mention how often you run?
I run twice a week typically, maybe 3 times if I'm feeling good. I definitely don't feel like my muscles are too sore, I'm pretty good about not over-exerting those I think. It's just the shin bones/splints that kill me and keep me from getting back out there.

Unfortunately I can't say, it genuinely feels like the front of my shin is on fire with little stabbing feelings all over it, but I really couldn't place left/right to it. It's all over the front half. Sorry if that complicates it.

And thanks to all who are responding. I honestly didn't expect to get this kind of help from Sup Forums!

I'm training for a marathon and ran 30 miles over 5 days last week and now have a serious knee injury

A whole week and my knee still hurts to bend...

Any advice or similar experiences? I think it's the cartilage that surrounds the knee that's fractured, but not too sure

np b/ro, try sticking to trail or track running, I hope you figure it out man, running is like a free high. Like I'm a really unhappy person but I run everyday and at least for those couple of hours afterwards I feel okay.

Maybe see a doctor as fast as possible? If there is a fracture they wont do shit as you just have to heal, but if there is inflammation then they might give you some anti-inflammatory?

>It's just the shin bones/splints that kill me and keep me from getting back out there.
Hm, you are about my height, but I only experienced this kind of thing when I had lost maybe 20 kg, then it was because of over exercising.

I would maybe try to do less distance. Or as I have learned over the years, that you should set an amount of time and not a distance. Say 30 min at a pace that you are able to run comfortably. Then increase slowly from this.

Also, try resting for a week before starting again, and if the pain still comes back you should talk to your doctor about it.
