i think to understand the whole idea of fascism study italian history from the 1920 to 1950. fascism started as a new modern way of thinking that young italians would embrace as a protest against the "old" 1800s.
mussolini did great things in rome at first, but shit went down horribly in the next 20 years

first of all mussolini gained power with a literal march on rome, with an army composed of ww1 vets and and young italians that wanted to vindicate their patriotism. in ww1 italy was promised some land that they didn't get, so people thought of it as a "mutilated victory", and joined mussolini. italian poet d'annunzio was of great influence in this. since the italian king was a little bitch he recognised mussolini's power and let him take power. first things he did, removed all powers from the king and the senate. then proceeded to make people sign for the fascist party. of course if you signed it would be all good, but if you refused you could get beaten or worse killed by the "camicie nere" (black shirts). he proceeded with trying to bring rome to greatness as was the roman empire, building monuments, he built the stadium, bonified a swamp and so on. he evn banned foreign words like "weekend" and stuff like that. went on for approx 15 years, with killings becoming mre frequent and more and more people realizing fascism was not what they expected. in 1939 mussolini made an alliance with hitler, but the italian army was without money and very weak. to finance the army mussolini even made public gold collections from the people. with racial laws, the germans invading italy at the end of the war, italian army dieing for a foreign cause, the rebels with the help of the americans killed mussolini (who was escaping) and defeated the germans.
