don't waste your fucking money on a kid's game

iirc, you can get cheap starter decks for like 10 bucks? those are basic and come with a tutorial, buying cards will vary on the age but packs are like 2-4 bucks depending where you get them and boxes are like 80+

fucking k y s n g r

Depends, if you want to go competitive a deck in standard could cost a couple hundred. You can start by checking out a local card shop and finding some nice people who are willing to teach you. You can also participate in draft tourneys which is you getting some packs and crafting a deck from them. Puts a lot of luck and deck building but I really enjoy it., but might wanna hold off on that once you have some idea of how to craft a deck.

You have to spend a shit ton of money and get all the good cards because that what everybody else does. Enless you have somebody who is also on a budget to play with i wouldn't bother.

You don't want to waste your Fridays playing cards with sad, lonely autists, better to trade porn with them here... In all seriousness buying physical cards isn't worth it, try the online version if you really want to go for it although tbh it's too much of an investment in terms of time/money.

dont listen to the people saying that it isnt worth it or its a waste of time lmao. if you have disposable income and free time do whatever the fuck you want OP

"nice people" made me giggle a bit. Everybody i ever played with ranged from Ha! i won to aaaand your dead on turn three how do you like magic so far?

OP here moneys not really a huge concern however I dont want to blow huge amounts, A couple of hundred maybe to buy a decent deck? How many cards come in a box?

meh, you can do alright on tourneys that are not constructed as long as you understand the game's basics and put in the time to look at what's coming in the set. It can make for a half fun day but you sort of feel ridiculous at the sheer amount of kids and fucking real life fedora types

Hahaha OP here yeah i love strategy board games I spend lots of time playing chess and bridge but I would like something a little more diverse and interesting I have a pretty bus life but dont mind spend free time on games.

Try the free android/iphone game "Duels of the Planeswalkers". See how you feel about it as a game. It teaches the basics of magic.

If you enjoy that, where do you intend to play with, and with who?

Random people at a local store? Consider "drafting" the latest set. It's a good way to get into magic without dropping a ton of money on stuff you're not sure of. Nobody has a real advantage of money here, as the cards are random and your decks are built on the spot. It'll be somewhere around 15 bucks for the evening to do a draft and play the matches against your opponents.

If you've got friends playing, find out what format they play. The buy in cost could range anywhere from 100 to 1000 or more dollars. If they play casually you'll have an easier time getting into things.

Buy your singles online as opposed to intro decks if you're looking for particular cards. Buying boosters is usually a losing battle.

>"Kids game"

Thanks! Ill check it out! Just with mates and the girlfriend really! it will always be casual just every now and then we really enjoy sunday afternoon games sessions, we all regularly have large groups playing risk war hammer. ect.

I'm currently making a write up of all the major formats and styles of play, keep this going so I can help OP.

Im assuming you are a beginner and you want to start out now, starting with a building pack (180 cards from different cards) is a way to go, however, it might be harder to get the cards you need.

You can try to buy booster packs, but that turns out to be expensive and you have less choice in deciding to create your deck (by deciding to build your deck you learn a lot quicker the ups and downs of each aspect)

find a place where you can buy single cards (commons and uncommons), they go for around 25-75c a card and you can then decide to build a card and you get access to a lot more cards, so you get a good idea of how it works

(you can usually pick up second hand cards either at boardgame stores or conversions, and heads up, land cards should make up around 40% of your deck, I would also suggest building one monocolored and one dual colored deck (my two are green, and black and white, goodluck)

You guys could grab the "Commander" preconstructed decks. It's a fun format worth looking into, and suited for multiplayer longer games.

You can also get Duel Decks, which are suited for two players playing against each other.

You're a fucking moron for spending money on some useless cards that will never get you any pussy. Don't waste your money on some fucking decorative pieces of paper. Spend your money on something worthwhile, like a fucking EDUCATION. Good lord, I knew OP Was a fag, but I didn't know he was THIS much of a fag

Holy shit. It's gorgeous.
Way to fucking expensive

But

Gorgeous nonetheless

Maybe unlike you OP has a job that doesn't entail a grease fryer and can afford to splurge on things that he finds fun in. KYS

(its the most expensive card in the game, it usually goes for around $2500-2500, but most rare powerful cards are around $25-100, but there are some collectors cards, which go for over a thousand)

Pretty damned expensive. Also, decide now if you want to play the online version with virtual cards, or with real cards an local people. Because buying one doesn't get you the other.

Just make a mono blue burn deck, include lots of elves and devils, and plenty of shadowborn apostles, the last thing your going to need is at least 2 black lotus. Best of luck OP
Sincerely; newfag

I love you

Okay since the people in this thread aren't giving you all the facts, I'm gonna lay it down for you. There are tons of ways to play Magic, and none of them are wrong. Let's list off the styles of play. First, constructed formats, which consist of building a deck with cards you already own.

>Kitchen Table
This is the most casual and most friendly of styles of play. Basically it boils down to build a deck with whatever cards you want, and as long as it fits the deck building requirements (Min 60 cards, no more than 4 of a card other than basic land) you should be good. Most play groups will have their own rules as to what is and isn't okay. This is generally the first place you'll play, but you'll usually transition to something else.

>Standard
This is a sanctioned format that uses some of the most recent sets as a restriction for what cards you can use. It's the cheapest constructed format available, but the cards available change every time a new block comes out, so you may end up spending more money in the long run than on other formats.

>Modern
This is an "eternal" format, meaning that the cards are never rotated out, but new cards keep getting added. Everything from 8th edition on is legal, minus a banned list. This is a fairly expensive format to be competitive, decks running several hundred to over $1000. This format is very cut-throat and fast, and generally favors aggressive decks due to the cards available.

>Legacy
This is the other common "eternal" format, with all cards from all of MtG available, aside from a banned list. This game is very fast, much like modern, but with more options for less aggressive and more methodical play. It is priced higher than modern, and has a smaller player base at the moment because of that.

>Commander/EDH
This is almost an extension of Kitchen Table magic, and the format has a huge range of play styles and price point. This is an excellent casual format, but I would recommend just learning the game first.

What's your Kik or email? I can set you up. Where are you from?

(as for price, you are looking at around $40-70 to start out and then about $10 after that, to improve your decks (you will make some mistakes))

Uh-huh. I'm sorry that you never leave your basement, bud. I think it would be really beneficial to you if you actually left; sounds like you need to go out and get a better fucking job than trying to argue like a fag on the internet willing to throw money away on something as useless as MTG cards.

You are paying money for DECORATIVE PAPER! Are you fucking stupid?

Seems you failed in life so far. Good luck for the future!

If you want to be competitive, you will save lots of money by finding out which cards you want and buying them individually, buying packs and boxes will get you a lot of shit you don't need and not much that you do need. Look up the current meta online and see what kind of deck you might enjoy playing and emulate it as well as you can given your budget, as you get better at deck building and as time goes on the meta will change and you can try and build something more customized to your playstyle.

If you want to play casual, starter decks and booster packs are fine though, most people who play casually are nice enough not to bring super rare or expensive shit into a match with someone they know is a newbie, so even a cheap starter deck can fare pretty well.

All in all though, it's a very expensive hobby for competitive play. If you get good at it you can make some decent money by buying new cards before the meta really gets going then sell/trade those cards that fit the meta back at a premium.

Start playing for on mtgo its cheap and will give you a feel of how the game is at a higher level and if you like it start buying singles IRL and build a deck if you are looking to built a collection and profit invest in dragons of tarkhir boxes

Fuck I sound aspie sorry for grammar

I'm not the one paying assloads of money for small rectangles of paper with an image on them. Leave your basement. Please. The sun misses you. The grass misses you. The bus won't miss you and I hope you get struck by it.

>t. guy on Sup Forums on a Saturday night

buy counterfeit cards, put them in cases, no one will even know

Actually, it's closer to morning where I am. So.. It'd be me going on Sup Forums on SUNDAY morning

lol you fucking retard i have made thousands off your "kid game" still play it and when i need extra cash for something sell the shit i was playing with.
You are just a troll or a bitch.

I never said I do I'm just trying to defend OP from your poor ass.

Secondly it's fucking 2AM so I have nothing better to do besides sleep (insomnia = no sleep)

And the cards are as much "just paper" as vidya is "just 1s and 0s.

It's called a hobby fag, so I reiterate KYS.

>How much will it cost to buy enough cards to have a decent deck ?
All of your dignity

Having a hobby makes you a faggot apparently

Try untap. It's a free MTG game with every card ever printed, and lots of helpful people. Lots of shitheads too, though.

modern now with the two new white bombs for soul sisters i would go soul sisters cost you about $130 and it just jumped a tier cuz of the new rides as one card plus the 26 life card

Yeah right? All these self conscious fags projecting their insecurities.

>poor
I live in a penthouse. do you?
I know what insomnia is, you fucking dolt
Yes. That last statement is true!

Get a fucking hobby that doesn't involve spending assloads of money on paper.

Again, I reiterate. Leave your mother's basement, please. The sun misses you more than your mother misses my dick
but you ARE a fag!

Next up we have the limited formats, where your resources for building a deck are limited to the cards you get on site.

>Draft
Here, you are given 3 packs, and you open them one at a time, picking a single card and passing the cards around the table until there are no cards left in the packs. You then construct your deck with the cards you drafted, plus any basic lands you want to add to your deck from outside the draft pool.

>6 Pack Sealed
Here you are given 6 booster packs to make your deck, plus basic lands you want to add to the pool.

These are both affordable ways to expand your collection and play magic, and have no cost barrier for entry other than the cost to buy the packs.

I got into magic in november because my wife said i should get a hobby after i finished my degree.
I prefer drafting as it is not that expensive and always a new challenge. I really do not like the 60 cards constructed formats because i have no joy in playing the same "10" cards over and over again. But that might be different for you.
What i really like are the Commander preconstructed decks. All decks are about the same powerlevel so when i play with my wife/fathrr /friends we all have the same chances of winning and i feel with those it is a little less dependi g on how skillfull you are. Also since except for the basic lands you only have one copy of each card in a 100 card deck it makes everythi g more interesting as you never know what they play nor what youre going to draw.

I'm really trying to understand what you have against this game.
Did some older kid hustle you for cards as a child or what?
literally everyone who has played this game has had to acknowledge they spent a shit ton of money on cardboard and they've all pretty much come to terms with it.
Who hurt you?

>but you sort of feel ridiculous at the sheer amount of kids and fucking real life fedora types

Sad but true.
I have a handful of hobbies like MTG that are really fun to dabble in, but are unfortunately dominated by the obsessive, shut-in, fedora crowd. Shame really, that some losers can't just enjoy a game but instead ruin it for the rest of us by turning it into a no-lifer activity.

Oh yes 6pack sealed is also pretty fun. The only time i buy boosters is for draft or 6pack sealed.

hey troll
also /tg/ why would you be in here?

This is quite funny as my wife urged me to get a hobby that involves going outside and meeting people. So i chose mtg.
On the other hand where i play i not even ince saw someone wearing a fedora or any other kind of hat. Nor do the people there comply to your stereotypes of magic players.

depends on format and who you wanna play against. if youre just playing casual with friends 20-50 bucks will get you a useful deck.

To add to this, buying boosters is a scam. It's like opening cases in CS:GO, you're not likely to get what you need or make your money back. If you want to build a specific deck, it's way more cost effective to buy singles.

You just reminded me of a kid I saw at an FNM forever ago (back when I actually had the income to play standard), who had a bunch of his favorite cards modded to look like ponies, and it was all he talked about to all of his opponents while playing. You definitely see some weirdos, but I've played things like D&D enough that most of them have stopped phasing me by now.

>Try the free android/iphone game "Duels of the Planeswalkers".

I just tried to find this on the Google Play store for Android, nothing showed up. Where to find it?

Good conversations on /tg/ actually happen fairly slowly, when you can even find them to begin with amongst all the quest shit. I need something to entertain me while waiting.

Try just Magic: Duels

The question you should really b asking is "how much will it cost to buy enough cards for a decent dect every time a new expansion is realeased invalidating my current deck" also u prolly should ask how often expantions are released, protip, its very often

magic.wizards.com/en/content/magic-duels-download

No Android??

It looks like in the PS it's just called "Magic 2015," but in the description it says "Duels of the Planeswalkers."

Just to clear up any confusion.

Rotation really only affects standard players if you play something like commander or any of the other casual formats you'll always have new stuff to add to your deck but it won't "invalidate" it

Alpha black lotus run 13k plus

OP here thanks everyone for all your information I really appreciate it! and to all you out there saying its a waste of money like i said in previous posts moneys not really a concern Im fairly young and have a very successful business and in my free time(which i have alot of) i enjoy playing games you may even call me a nerd sorry poorfags if this is to much to comprehend for you! thank you very much everyone its great to see there is a knowledgeable community here for future reference

depends on your format.40-100$ for a casual deck for just groups of friends 50-60 for standard (with another 20 or so every couple months when new sets come out)

maybe100-200 for EDH

or you could use cockatrice and play with all the cards for free against internet people

cockatrice.woogerworks.com for that

It depends. Just start out watching tolarian community college on YouTube. He will help

The game is a lot of fun and if you have friends that play it can be awesome. However, as with all trading card games, it really is a money sink. If you are planning on being competitive you'll need to buy the newest sets which come out. Also, once you get into it there is a huge urge to buy more and more, at least for me half the fun is opening up packs. Maybe if you can pick up someone's old cards on craigslist, you and your friends could play with those, it would still be a lot of fun.
