He didn't. The movie made him look like the bad guy and made him kill the son of the reddinant just to start the revenge plot. In the book and real event fitzgerald had to let Glass alone because he didn't believed he was going to make it and to secure the safety of the group. In the end after a brief fight, Hugh forgave him and and understand why fitz did it and Fitz apologize and gives his stuff back to Hugh.
Iñarritu just wanted to make a revenge film with scenes from tarkovsky movies and the ending of memories of murder.
