Don't blame him. Blame that tone-deaf dog.

Hey all
I've been playing piano for quite some time now, I wouldn't say that I am good, but not terribly bad either. I just finished Chopin's Ballade in G minor for reference.

I've been interested in learning the Russian method of playing piano, since I've been getting RachBoners lately. Any help appreciated, thanks.

And to contribute, Rachmaninoff Symphony no. 2 as a piano concerto!

>concertists who take no soft drug before performances

You guys are heroes in my book. In my orchestra there are literally only 3 guys who plays always sober (first fute, first violin and a basoonist who is just to prude for it), everyone else don't have the mental strenght to remain calm during performances.

I personally always drink a 33cl beer before playing. Most of my fellow musicians smoke weed to remain calm. A few of them are delving into opiates (wich is shockingly common in modern orchestras).

I always hear about stuff like this so it shouldn't surprise me but it still does. It makes sense, though, because I always refused to participate in my teacher's recitals and it pissed her off. That was when I was too young for drugs.

>tfw singer so muh delicate instrument gets fucked up if I even so much as drink the day before a performance

I mean, if I have to sing something that lies a bit low, I can get away with a beer or two the night before, but I've had to perfect the art through trial and error over a number of years.

Fairly good conductor who was sometimes great.

>opiates (wich is shockingly common in modern orchestras).
judging by your grasp of English, I'm going to just assume you don't know what you're talking about. How many different professional orchestral musicians have you heard of taking opiates? I've never heard of one. Professional performers dont drink before performances, they definitely dont smoke weed before performances. Even youth orchestras have more restraint than that.

Whats the best recording of Bartoks 2nd violin concerto?

Old recordings meme welcome I guess but I'd prefer something with decent sound quality

Try Faust for a modern recording

Thanks

Faust for sure is a good modern one. Menuhin's with Dorati is a bit pastoral for the piece, but it's still worth hearing for a different take, and you get that great Mercury sound. It should be noted that Menuhin was a favored violinist of the composer.

And, of course, we have the rare privilege of being able to hear the piece during its premiere performance--the Mengelberg/Szekely performance. It is hard to overstate how good the interpretation is, and it's doubly amazing how well all the performers have the music in their stride. Personally I think it's still unmatched in its interpretive qualities, but since it's a live recording from the late 30s you get a lot of surface noise, ticks, etc. I think it's an essential recording to hear, but it probably isn't for everyone.

What does /classical/ think of "variation" works? What is your favorite?

I would go with :
youtube.com/watch?v=cUh3uGulS-M

I'll restrain myself to variations that feature "Variation" somewhere in the title because otherwise I'll be here for ages and I've got an essay to write. Except for including the final movement of K491 cause I love it.

Variation on a theme by Haydn - Brahms
Variations on a theme by Paganini - Brahms
Variations and fugue on a theme by Handel - Brahms
Helena Variations - Bantock
10 Variations on a Finnish Folk Tune (Kultaselle) - Busoni
Variations on "La ci darem la mano" - Chopin
Variations on a Slovakian Theme - Martinu
36 Variations on "The People United Will Never Be Defeated" - Rzewski
Fantasia (quasi variazione) on Old 104th Psalm Tune - Vaughan Williams

i like the diabelli variations

The variations in the clarinet quintet are GOAT too.

Then let two of the dead--us two--for once live life to its uttermost--before we go down to our graves again! But not here in the half darkness! Not here with this hideous dank shroud flapping around us---No, no--up in the light, and in all the glittering glory! Up to the Peak of Promise! There we will hold our marriage-feast, oh, my beloved! The sun may freely look on us. All the powers of light may freely look on us--and all the powers of darkness too.

I do Ehnes. Not huge on that piece, though.

youtu.be/ASvb2-v_-XQ

How old are they? If they're 14+, you should pull a Bartok and take one as a bride.

Depends on what you consider a "variation" work. If it counts, the Art of Fugue. If not, I'd probably go with the last movement of Biber's double Viole d'Amore partita.

Goldberg by '55 Gould because it's the shortest. I like them when they don't go on forever with a single melody.

How can one man be so based?

Time for jail, Cal

I got a soft spot for Follia variations & their evolution per composer.

WEEEEEE OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

dailymotion.com/video/x1atzuy_what-s-opera-doc_shortfilms

Wagner's work is of the uttermost subtlety, complexity and sophistication, imbued as much with delicacy and tenderness as with emotional assertiveness (and containing, it so happens, as much soft as loud music). Far from being affectively crude it is of the deepest psychological penetration, inexhaustible in its insight into the human condition.

Hey guys can you recommend an underrated composer?

Bach.

Have 3:
Martinů
youtube.com/watch?v=e1j_K752Wac
Schnittke

Arensky

microtonality is the future of music tbph

youtube.com/watch?v=127K6DGpbhc

All properly rated if not overrated.
Fuck off poly.

>I accidentally a whole western music

Its more than no one knows them to rate them. Underrated as in under-performed and unknown compared to the incredible music they have produced.
Underrated as in you undervalue their importance and value. Martinů as a prime example of how tonal music can still be relevant in the 20th century, Schnittke as the spiritual successor to Shostakovitch, and incredibly influential in 20th century composers. Arensky as hugely important and influential in the Moscow conservatory, and a wealth of beautiful music rarely recorded or performed.

>the incredible music they have produced
None of them have any.
