I preferred Art Angels, it doesn't sound like she secretly wants to kill herself. Painting With sounds superficially happy with all the joy and color sucked out of it. It sounds like stagnation and death.

It just sounds so stale and bleak. Despite putting on a front of being really wacky and fun there's really nothing to draw you in, everything's just kind of there. I can't factually prove to you that I get a vibe of both discontent and complacency on this album, but that's how these songs strike me. I wouldn't be against a straight up pop music like this if it were done well. This is just them going against their strengths to avoid stagnation while still sounding stagnant and just falling further.

so basically it has nothing to do with the actual musical content of the album and everything to do with assumptions you're making about the band?

Why should I subject myself to something that's terrible? Because it was made by a band that was amazing? Good bands historically make horrible records. Painting With is that bad record you never want your favorite band to make. I feel embarrassed when I'm listening to it. Every argument you can make as to why it's good I already probably tried to tell myself in the month after it came out.

I feel like Avey Tare is trying too hard to be positive. Maybe that's why the quality of his work suffered, because you don't get fucking Here Comes the Indian from "positive vibes." Even Feels was straight up uncomfortable at some points.
