It's funny that this is considered Coltrane's masterpiece when drummer Elvin Jones' performance is really the highlight of the whole album.
I'd say Coltrane's best musicianship is on Crescent.

Well it's improvisation based so instead of having repeated hooks it just has a continuous flow of notes. But a lot of pop and R&B music could basically be thought of as Jazz + hooks.
